Also, people will say lower mileage cars haven't been ran, gaskets dry rot from sitting etc., so you can either risk it like myself and do your own inspection, or pay for PPI and have it checked more thoroughly.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Depending on your state these cars vary greatly in pricing. Colorado seems to be pricey with the 996's in general. I could go to AZ, CA or Texas and pick one up for cheaper in general. Example.... A 2003 C2 with 70,000 miles goes for around $24k here. Mine was listed at $23,995 and I got it for $22,000 out the door.

Model: 911 Carrera Model Year: 2001 Color: Arctic Silver Interior Color: Black Mileage: 70,000 Transmission: Manual Notable Options: Xenons, 18" Twists, PSM, 3-spoke wheel, heated seats, stainless tips Notable Upgrades: H&R springs, Eibach dampers, expensive stereo, clear (actually kinda yellow) bra Service History/Manuals: Complete Condition of vehicle: 9.5/10 PPI: Self-inspected and test drove Recommended maintenance: Normal IMS Bearing Status: Seal replaced at Porsche dealer, but bearing is original...uh-oh Asking Price: $18,000 Purchase Price: $18,000 Purchase Date: 10/2015 Where Purchased: Shrub Oak, NY Private Party or Dealer: Private General Notes: 2-owner, dealer-serviced, looked good and had decent service history so I bought it. It had 2 bent wheels but I sold $2k worth of the useless stereo equipment in it to finance a new set of wheels. Has survived 10 track days so far unscathed. If it blows up, oh well; I got to drive a Porsche 911 at several of our country's finest road courses, and drive it to work and on errands many days in between. Money well spent.

^ nice work and clean looking car. Model: 996.2 C2 Model Year: 2003 Color: Seal Gray Interior Color: Graphite Gray Milage: 71400 Transmission: manual Notable Options: very low option C2, Carrera II wheels Notable Upgrades: IMS Solution, gt metallic silver center console & dash, leather instrument cluster in matching grey, 15mm spacers, H&R adjustable sways f/r, cold air intake updates to OEM airbox (silicon throttle body tube & matching plug). Service History/Manuals (Complete, Partial, None): Carfax history with Porsche dealership in SoCal from 2005 & extended warranty coverage through my purchase date. I have receipts since early 2016 of Solution work that included engine out refresh of hardware, seals & hoses that needed replacement. New tires & AOS in June of 2016, coil packs, spark plugs, coolant line, engine mounts in Feb 2017, 5 oil changes in my 11,000 miles of ownership and now running DT40. UOAs going to start soon. Condition of vehicle: Mechanically A, Cosmetically A interior & B exterior. Needs a respray on the bumpers although chips aren't awful. I try to keep the rubber seals conditioned and they seem to be aging well, maybe a replacement at 25yrs or so. PPI: Fairly clean PPI with window not going down all the way (fixed), headlight fuse failing (fixed) Recommended maintenance: Good oil, frequently. Respect basic maintenance as critical due to the need to stack the odds in favor of m96s. Small mistakes can be expensive, so enjoy the car and treat it well. IMS Bearing Status: IMS Solution Asking Price: 22,900 Purchase Price: 21,400 Purchase Date: 4/20/2016 Where Purchased: Small German car specialist Private Party or Dealer: Dealer after auction after 2nd owner traded it in General Notes: Planning to add center console delete, sport springs or coilovers, repainted bumpers with 3M protection. I mostly drive this car in the canyons and freeways out west. It doesn't spend time in traffic & has very low type 1 over-revs and zero type 2s. My plan is to keep it through the end of the decade and hopefully just add a turbo or ~81 targa down the road. The performance on this car is incredible, a true momentum machine. It's been on road trips from SLC-Telluride/Ouray, SLC-Zion NP, SLC-Central Colorado. Very reliable car for me so far. Most of the costs incurred are due to trying to frontload maintenance costs & be proactive with the 15 year refresh of peripherals. It's a pleasure to work on & drive.

Model: 996.2 C4S Coupe Model Year: 2002 Color: Silver Interior Color: Graphite Grey Mileage: 80K Transmission: Tip Notable Options: Litronic lights, full leather, heated seats, rear window wiper, power lumbar supports, 6-CD, sport steering wheel, Notable Upgrades: none -- it is bone stock. Service History/Manuals (Complete, Partial, None): Partial. Only the CarFax and dealer maintenance records (almost nothing, they have used Indy) Condition of vehicle: Excellent (about a 98/100). One minor scratch on front spoiler, a couple of nicks on the ignition key plastic surround. All systems and everything work correctly. Tires and brakes were new. PPI: Yes, the local Indy Porsche repair has been around for over 40 years. The owner drives a 996.1 with over 200K miles and did the inspection himself. Only a couple of yellow warnings about the PSM from the Durametric scan/readout. Recommended maintenance: get a 2nd key IMS Bearing Status: Unknown. However the Tip transmission is a "remanufactured" one so there is some hope that the bearing was also done at the same time the trans is installed. No oil wetness at all. Indy recommends to service the IMSB upon next trans removal. Will change oil often, inspect drain lug / filter each time, and drive it like a Porsche Asking Price: $25,700 Purchase Price: $25,000 Purchase Date: 2/24/2017 Where Purchased: San Diego Private Party or Dealer: Dealer General Notes: I would like to suggest that mileage on Porsches is not as big a factor as people may think. More important is condition of the car, records, PPI, and the cost of the list of maintenance that is due. I took my '82 911 to 295K miles, the 968 to 200K and going strong. The same will happen with 996 --- if -- required maintenance and repair is done. Therefore I think that escalated pricing for lower mileage isn't a good value. Paying lower prices for high mileage is a good deal.

General Notes: I would like to suggest that mileage on Porsches is not as big a factor as people may think. Paying lower prices for high mileage is a good deal." Syncro: I agree 110% I had a 04' CTT with 143k (I think) sold with about 160k, the current owner (4th total owner) still has it and it's been great, just basic maintenance. It had a ton of records, upgrades, and replaced parts. That will go at least 250k miles before anything else major is needed. Everything from the GPS, air suspension, turbo's etc worked flawlessly. I actually miss the truck. She had upgrades to boot, it was fast (slightly larger turbos, larger injectors, ecu tune, sport cats, etc) even with the mods being done after 100k miles she still was good.

That's probably true for us enthusiasts, but it's a fact that most of the world values things differently. As cars approach and pass 100k miles, people assume they are going to start requiring a lot of costly repairs, and also at that point they are somewhat old and out of style, so people just place less value on them. I've always felt that time is actually more of a killer than mileage, since a lot of plastic and rubber pieces, paint, etc. start to fall apart after a certain amount of time in the sun, exposure to seasonal temperature extremes, and so on, regardless of how much the car actually moves. So I totally agree, I'd rather buy a well-maintained, newer car with a ton of miles on it, rather than an older car with no miles. And when shopping for a car I don't worry too much about mileage; I care more about age and condition. But the reality is that for 95+% of people, a car with >100k miles is NEVER going to command the same price as one with significantly fewer miles. This can be a great thing for enthusiasts, since you can frequently find an owner that's afraid of their high-mileage car and take it from them at a pretty low price.

Have about 80% of records. Condition of vehicle: Exterior: 9.5--only knock on the exterior is that it has a clear bra that covers the front bumper cover but only half of the hood. Really bugs me and will be replaced soon with a full front-end clear bra. PPI: Yes, local Pcar dealer and cost $300. Specifically asked them to pull the oil filter and check for particles. Recommended maintenance: Car was nearly 100% mechanically, only had to replace the oil sender unit, as it was non-functional and thus I couldn't get an oil pressure reading. IMS Bearing Status: LN IMSB paid for by PO when he purchased the car, about 2k miles and 1.5 years ago. Asking Price: $36,500 Purchase Price: $35,000 Purchase Date: 10/2016 Where Purchased: Denver, CO Private Party or Dealer: Private Party General Notes: Yes I realize that I paid very near the top of the market for a 996 C4S, but a) Porsches are more expensive than average here in Denver, and b) the only option (in my mind) that would make this car more desirable and worthy of a premium, would be the X51 powerkit. I don't think I would want a lower mileage car because those types of cars seem to be more plagued by the typical 996 problems due to lack of regular driving.

Is the 964/993 the new 996? While our 996 prices are slowly creeping up. The actual sales prices (not listing prices or asking prices) of 964s and 993 are slowly sinking into the sunset. Here are some figures pulled today from ebay. These are only auctions in which the vehicle actually sold. It does not use cabs, 4S, turbos, or targas...only C2 coupes. Of 23 that sold the average price was $43.2k But that included 4 that were over $50k. 11 sold for under $40k, 6 for between $40 and $45k, 2 between $45k and $50k, and 4 over $50k. Of the 11 under $40k, the average price was $33.6k. Of the top three prices...$79k...$74k...$69.3k the mileage was 16k, 24k and 18k. Do not be surprised if eventually the prices for the first of the water cooled and the last of the air cooled reach common ground.

Hey I used to be one of those guys who turned my nose up to water cooled Porsches, and now I own a 996. Most likely the "purists" are coming around now, realizing how good the 996 really was, and accepting that watercooled 911's are here to stay and it's never going back. That said well maintained low mileage air cooled 911's will always have value. But sometimes so much value that you can't enjoy the car since it's too much of a collectors item.

Will be doing a transmission fluid change this weekend as she has a whine (not loud) under throttle load. Could be the pinion bearing (and will check for silver 'gunk' north of the drain plug) but thought I'd do the obvious and simplest thing first and see what results. I used to have a '74 911S Targa.. but her old age and my fear of taking her out in the wet meant I wasn't drivng her much so I've made the jump to this lass.

Model: C2 Model Year: 1999 Color: Black Interior Color: Black Mileage: 89,234 Transmission: 6-spd Notable Options: 014 (Sports Options Package 030, 220, 375, and 376) which includes LSD Notable Upgrades: Euro GT3 seats. Service History/Manuals: I am 3rd owner. Came with 3 keys, manuals, set of 1999 Tech Manuals (expensive), and window sticker. Possibly had new clutch installed prior to second owner, but no documentation. Some service records from second owner. Carfax includes multiple entries for service. Appeared well maintained as far as changing the oil. Condition of vehicle: Car was a bring a trailer Craigslist deal from a local seller. Battery was not being charged and car could not be driven any distance without stalling due to loss of electrical power. I was able to hear the engine run, but did not drive it or get a PPI. Crazy I know. Previous owner (PO) installed new battery, and it would die. He installed a new alternator. Car ran a short time and then battery began to die again. He decided to sell it at that point. I trailered it home and check connections associated with alternator and grounds. Found a bad connection from the battery to the body. Cleaned everything, charged battery, check voltage drop to positive connection at back of alternator (approx. 0.3v drop) and installed new alternator (the new alternator PO installed also went bad from the bad ground). Car runs great now. PPI: I didnt even drive it! Trailered it home. Recommended maintenance: I will do an engine out in a few months to replace RMS, IMS with LNE Solution, check clutch, 160 degree thermostat, upgraded oil pressure piston and spring, chain pads, and anything else I find while I am in there. Some minor things like blinker return, console latch, some missing trim clips, etc. are being fixed as I find them. Original taillights had stress cracks, like the wide body tail lights often get. I replaced them with LED tail light assemblies. I also polished the front headlights with a Sylvania headlight restoration kit. IMS Bearing Status: Apparently original. Asking Price: 15,000 (when initially listed on Craigslist) Purchase Price: 11,500 Purchase Date: March, 2017 Where Purchased: Greenville, SC Private Party or Dealer: PP General Notes: I took a chance on a box of chocolates. Looks like I got a good milk chocolate with cashews in the middle instead of one of those dark chocolates with the nasty goo. Car was originally purchased by Michelin Research and Development (Spartanburg SC) from Brumos Porsche in Florida. Michelin installed a bolt in roll cage and Euro GT3 seats. They drove it as a tire tester for 42k miles over 14 years. Second owner bought it and drove it primarily between Greenville SC and Spartanburg SC up and down I85 for 2 years. He put 47k miles on it. Roll cage was removed when Michelin sold it. Has spent its entire life in South Carolina.

I just purchased a nice black 996 cab; 77k miles for 14700.00 His asking price was 14000.00, but after looking at all of his receipts, totaling 34K over the past 15 years of ownership... including the last on showing an engine "refresh" 250 miles prior (rebuilt heads, hone cylds, rings bearings, rod bolts, oil separator) totaling 14,700.00 (apparently it overheated in stop/go traffic)... I just felt sorry for him and gave him the extra cash. I plan on reselling after my 1 year warranty expires!

If that's your price range you should seriously look at Slakkers car he just listed with FSI 3.8 built motor!

POST 107Original post

Quotes source post: 14415371

I don't think $35k is too far off, but I'll pay a premium for a lower mileage car, while others choose to do the opposite. However, looking at $35k range, I might hold off and save a little bit more play money and opt for a 997. Really depends what you want out of a car. Low miles was one of my main criteria, next to color combo/aero/6MT. Also, people will say lower mileage cars haven't been ran, gaskets dry rot from sitting etc., so you can either risk it like myself and do your own inspection, or pay for PPI and have it checked more thoroughly. I've replaced IMS, AOS, clutch, and a couple other bits, none of which needed to be, but that was an additional cost I would immediately incur. Or you can do like 808Bill said and look at Slakkers with the 3.8FSI. Whole lot of car for a great price.

Based on a "qiuick scan" of postings, (1) most 1999-2000 996s are trading in the $16-20K range, (2) most have 60-80K miles on them, and (3) many have had a IMSB replacement. And there are outliers at both ends of the price range. As always, documented maintenance history and a thorough PPI are key to acquiring a good running/long lasting 996, or any other Porsche for that matter. relinuca

Hello, New to Rennlist. Purchased a 2001 Carrera Cab, 58,000 miles, 6 speed, clean carfax and some service records. Black, Tan interior, new top, front seat covers and tires. Listed at $22,000, sold for $20,500 in Atlanta. Original clutch and IMS/RMS. My first Porsche...wanted one since I was a kid. Console top hinge broken, but found a kit on eBay. Planning to replace the hard-to-use radio. The previous owner installed a 'modulator' to allow Bluetooth. It works, but sounds bad and is much quieter than the radio. Also purchased a 2year/24K warranty for some peace mind. Cheers, Pat

Never posted my purchase in late Nov., so here goes: Model: 996 C4S Model Year: 2003 Color: Black Interior Color: Black Mileage: 82,500~ Transmission: Tip Notable Options: Rear wiper, Supple leather front/rear seats, heated & powered seats, Bose Hi-end/SatNav pkg., SS exhaust pipes, Sport Exhaust, Xenon lights, PSM, 18" Sport Technos (not on there when I bought it, but I purchased a set), Crest in headrests, -10mm lowered seats, $98,890 sticker price(!!) Notable Upgrades: Prev. owner had installed too small Victor wheels that I'm replacing w/ the S.T.'s mentioned above. USB and iPod interface for stock SatNav system. LED lighting under front hood and rear vents that I'm having removed. All else stock (for now). Service History/Manuals (Complete, Partial, None): Porsche dealer Service history stamps from original owner in Owner's Service book; Recent seller none provided, but was a DD and had 'sort' of PPI done by shop that maintained it for last 3~ years. Was told all fluids regularly done and alternator and water pump done at 80k miles (I think). Condition of vehicle: Exterior - good/okay; hood has a bump which needs to be flattened; front bumper resprayed and not very well; roof has bump in it; overall respray needed but I realized that before purchase. "Frunk" struts need to be replaced. Interior - very good/excellent, aside from some scraping on driver's side door handle/cards that I plan to redo or have painted or covered anyway. Seats in excellent shape, no rips/tears anywhere. All speakers work, some rattles but not too bad. Missing passenger's side seatbelt pillar cover that I ordered. Driver's side seat heater doesn't work. Engine bay you could eat off of. PPI: Sort of. All general 'car' mechanical bits good, but IMS not known if done but at this mileage it's not a worry for me. Recommended maintenance: Considered IMS but at this point not sure, as it would have happened by now if it were to go, so plan on 5-6k oil changes and more regular transmission fluid changes/checks. Full bare-metal respray. Wrap/paint some interior trim pieces. Repair seat heater (maybe, this is Texas after all). Left vent in center dash A/C unit blows less than the right one, so may be some blockage. Want to replace all interior lighting to LEDs. Replace "frunk" struts. Install spacers and Sport Techno wheels. New N-rated Michelins. Considering engine upgrades, but from reading here, may not be worth it. Replaced top cover of both key fobs with new 2-button pieces. Asking Price: $25,800 Purchase Price: $25,000 Purchase Date: 11/28/17 Where Purchased: Austin, TX Private Party or Dealer: Private Party General Notes: First 911 and first Porsche. Glad I went with the 996 over a similar priced Cayman S. Some things I overlooked and could have argued down more but price seemed fair for condition and seller fully disclosed all bigger items. But have learned to ask more questions and check more things next time around, which I feel you can only do after buying a car like this. Not as fast off the line as my old F10 550i, but infinitely more fun to drive and faster at high speeds, and the sound from the Sport Exhaust is just marvelous. I love that it starts as "On" when you turn it over. It's strangely fun to have a car you operate with a key again. Need to diagnose some rattling in the interior and replace the SatNav and amp (since it's an '03) after the exterior has been redone. Considering a Turbo or GT2 front end and GT2 wing/decklid, although the C4S looks great stock from the ***-end view. If offered to buy again, TBH I'd probably consider a different model altogether (like a C2 w/ Aerokit, simply for aesthetics) or find one a little better condition and lower mileage, but next time I'll know as I plan to keep it until 991 C2S or 997 GTS prices come down and I can daily that one, so it'll be in my hands for a while. I never thought I'd want a 911 but then I drove it and understood all the fuss about them. Fantastic cars, and plenty of interior room for a guy that's 6'3!

Model: Carrera 4 Model Year: 1999 Color: Arena Red Interior Color: Gray Milage: 87000 Transmission: 6MT Notable Options: 3 spoke steering wheel; CD changer in the frunk Notable Upgrades: Service History/Manuals (Complete, Partial, None): Carfax history only; no owner's manual Condition of vehicle: Exterior - perfect; interior - tired but not worn PPI: None, just a test drive Recommended maintenance: N/A IMS Bearing Status: Original. Asking Price: 15950 Purchase Price: 14700 Purchase Date: 12/17 Where Purchased: OKC Private Party or Dealer: Dealer General Notes: Test drive revealed significant clutch slippage. Part of the purchase deal was clutch replacement and also IMS inspect/replace. Opinion was replacement not needed. The job was done by an independent mechanic. I won't live in fear the thing will grenade itself, but I sure hope it doesn't. A couple things I can't figure out without an owner's manual. Maybe they need to be addressed by a pro. On the heater controls, it seems to make no difference whether I push the up arrow button, the oval grid button, or the down arrow button, the air blows out of every vent. I want footwell only air. The other thing is the mirror dip in reverse. No matter how I program the seat memory - in neutral, in reverse, or in 1st gear - the passenger mirror dips. I don't want it to. I was looking for an all wheel drive car, and this one popped up in the search. After some research here, I went for it. I was last in a Porsche Carrera in 1984, and to me it sounded like my sister's VW squareback wagon and looked like it had a high chair tray for a giant baby on the back of it. (Heresy? At least you couldn't see the road under the pedals in it.) Anyway, this one is not like that at all. I can see my son's 350Z was an attempt to copy this car. Kinda the same shape and even orange gauge lighting. This Carrera is fun and has a linear power pull up the revs. It feels more substantial than its size, but doesn't roll in turns. So far so good with this car.

Model: 996 C2 Model Year: 1999 Color: Arctic Silver Interior Color: Black Mileage: 68,423 Transmission: 6MT Notable Options: Full Leather, 8 way power seats, drive memory seat, 2 x cd compartment Notable Upgrades: Completely stock Service History/Manuals (Complete, Partial, None): Porsche dealer Service history stamps from original owner in Owner's Service book @ 30k Porsche in Raleigh, NC; Clean Carfax but no other records provided after 2008 Condition of vehicle: Exterior -I would give the exterior is excellent a 9.5 out of 10, there was minor touch up work done on the driver side door. Indy shop believes it was done by Porsche dealership. Color is spot on. Interior - very good/excellent, only real flaw was some scuffs/wear on the hood release and a few tiny scrapes on the leather wheel. PPI: Rolled the dice. Had a Post purchase inspection done at a local Indy called Lufteknic. Engine is very strong, needs brakes soon, motor and trans have never been separated. Recommended maintenance: 60k service, clutch and IMS, tires. Asking Price: 17,850 Purchase Price:17,850 Purchase Date: 12/15/2017 Where Purchased: Manassas, VA Private Party or Dealer: Dealer General Notes: I rolled the dice on this car without having a pre purchase inspection done. I was really in the market for a C4S, but I saw this posting come up on Auto trader. Decided I would make the 2hr drive up from Richmond to the dealer. I saw it had a PCA sticker in the window and it peeked my interest. I went up there thinking it would be a rag, but the walk around, my thorough inspection, and test drive proved me wrong. The car was super clean, and ran like a top. I have always been a gearhead and this 911 passed all the points on my inspection sheet. Put down a deposit, and came back with cash the next day. I have been loving it ever since. Put on a new set of tires, replaced the side markers and taillights with OEM clear tails for an updated look. The indy shop that did the post purchase inspection, Lufteknic gave me great insight into future maintenance. And I will be having them do the RMS IMS and clutch so I can enjoy this car for many years to come. For an early build date April 1998, it sure looks and performs great for 20 years old! Here is is after its bath today.

I just received a clean PPI report on an 05 Carrera with IMS fix, and just under 100k miles. Needs set of tires. Purchase price $21,500. I know this is a 996 thread, but thought I’d post here as a point of interest. I think I’m getting a great deal, not necessarily reflective of general values.

Alex, congrats on your new Porsche. I just bought my first in Jan...a lifelong yearning. Unlike yours, my 2001 didn’t come with much in the way of maintenance records, but had a new top and seat covers, so looks fresh. After reading all of the threads on IMSB failures, I bit the bullet and had mine replaced just for the peace of mind. Enjoy, Pat
