I modified the holes to remove easier, using slots on the back two bolts to allow it to slip out instead of removing the bolts completely.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Searched around, but cannot get definitive information on whether one exists for the later model 996s. If they do, where can I get one, and what does it cost?
And, if I can install it myself (jacking of the car needed?).
TIA!
Yes, they do exist. Got mine from Carnewal

for about $100. It's called the P96 Engine Protection Plate. Don't know how easy it is to attach the four bolts as I had it done when the RoW M030 was installed.
yeah, All I came up with regarding the plate was that it was for the 3.4 litre engine. Apparently, Porsche changed the pan enough so technically it wasn't needed unlike on the 3.4l.
I'll have to keep on searching.
the protection plate was meant for '98-'99 996s that had protruding bolt heads. i bought one for my '00 and have yet to install it, because it's just plain unnecessary (and my car is lowered). i've heard of cracked engine blocks on pre-'00 cars, and the plate was devised as a solution to this problem. the bolt heads were recessed on later cars.
i've been lucky. i looked underneath recently while my car was on a lift and there's nary a trace of any kind of scrapes or 'hits'.
i have a new plate available if someone wants one. just send me a private mail.
996.107.981.00. Tell your dealer to look under "Tequipment" parts. And, yes this plate is primarily for '98-'99 cars. Don't know why it's only listed as such.
I've never been able to find a picture of the plate on the actual car so here's one if anybody is interested.
By the way, these flat-top A/C hydraulic jackstands are great!!
Enjoy,

I have one from Gemballa and here in Wy it is a must. I modified the holes to remove easier, using slots on the back two bolts to allow it to slip out instead of removing the bolts completely. I also got 1/8th inch longer bolts in the back. Will
