Suggestion
Some comment that using a non-factory exhaust raises an issue of voiding warranty but others say its a replacement part (muffler) and can't void the warranty - don't know the final answer on this.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I will save everyone the same rhetoric that is said by all regarding the install of their new PSE. However, I will say this........if you do not have this mod, you MUST get it. Sure the engine sounds great without, but you will never believe just how much better it gets. THe wife said "do we really need this?" then heard it today and said "I am glad you didn't spend the extra dough on the electronics." Case settled.
I am never listening to the radio again, just the beautiful rumble of PSE! I just drove around for hours for no reason. Gotta run, have to go drive around for another couple hours.

Congrats - glad to hear you like it so much. I just ordered mine (parts) this morning but was still thinking maybe I should have heard them in person first. Can't wait!
Did you install the electronics? (I don't plan to.) EDIT - oops, misunderstood you and see you didn't.
Straight open! No electronics. I thought about it and the dealer wanted $550 (not bad for the labor) to install w/electronics so I decided to go without and add it after the fact if we "really" need to turn it off. Instead the wife heard it, loved it, glad I saved the 500+ dollars and made a trip to Tiffany and Co. for her (girls love that jewelery) with the savings. Now "I" am happy....the "wife" is happy.
Life is good.
RJMDAD996 - First note there are some other recent PSE threads on the board and you might want to search them.
As for where to get it, I think I got about as good a deal as you can get from Brandywine Porsche (this morning) (call Justin Lane in parts, [phone removed] - he was very helpful). They have PSE on ebay for $1,499, but I ordered it directly from them at that price (+$30 shipping to L.A.). I don't think you will find it cheaper (and I saved $125 sales tax too), and I have done a lot of research in recent days. Install varies but seems to take about 2 hours more or less of mechanic time - without electronics. Install instructions can be found on renntech.org and it looks really simple (without electronics) so you could probably DIY though I will have the dealer install it for convenience.
If you install the bypass switch (which enables you to turn off the sport exhaust (i.e. closes or opens the valves to make it basically a standard exhaust), there is wiring from the engine compartment to the dash, a $30 switch, and a pneumatic connection to the engine, all of which takes another 5-6 hours of mechanic time. It seems the majority opt not to install the electronics (you can always do it later if you find you need it). Many worry about precipitating interior squeaks and noise after pulling up everything needed to wire it up.
If you do install the electronics, you will probably want to disable the built-in function that shuts off the sport exhaust between something like 30-45 mph, which is for European noise regulations. To do that, you just pull a jumper out of the module that comes with the PSE - instructions can be found on renntech.org.
My research indicates most say no power gain, though some speculate you might get a few extra HP but Porsche doesn't want to advertise that. Some comment that using a non-factory exhaust raises an issue of voiding warranty but others say its a replacement part (muffler) and can't void the warranty - don't know the final answer on this.
The consensus on the boards seems to be that the PSE system and maybe RUF are the best, while GHL got a few good comments (and they have a nice sale for rennlist members - much cheaper at about $659 (which doesn't include a shutoff feature)), and there is a lot of debate about others. I probably should have listened to several but couldn't wait and decided to go with the PSE because its factory and gets good comments on sound.
Picked my 03 up Monday after PSE install with electronics. Needless to say my dealer did not give me nearly as good an install price as that available in Las Vegas. However, while I probably will rarely use the switch I love having it. The switch makes the exhaust even more silent than the standard 996 exhaust. Additionally it is just another toy to play with.
If cost is a consern don't worry about the swith though because I wouldn't say the PSE is that loud. My neighbors Mustang GT is much louder. But, the exhaust note now sounds as it should. (Reminds me of my 964 with modified airbox) Also, while PSE may not add any HP, the car sure does seem a lot faster. This is probably because I can't seem to drive under 45 and 4k rpm's anymore. All dealers should just order their P-cars with PSE. It would help sell the car especially since it would come with the switch and the customer could just shut it off if they didn't want the throatier exhaust note.
PSE is my second mod, now on to some carbon interior pieces... Boy I sure am glad I have a car that I can spend so much money on in quality factory additions after purchase.
Dell,
PSE was my first mod and I love it! As Anthony said above, the car finally sounds as it should. It's a great mod and you will not regret it.
And now the car sounds incredible when I drive with the windows down!
Mark
Anyone comapred the PSE to the GHL, Fabspeed, Dansk, etc... back to back. Just curious if they sound any different. Is it worth the extra grand to get the PSE over the GHL?
RJ,

click on "interactive specs" and you will get 2 sound clips you can hear. One w/o PSE and one w/.
Enjoy,

deputydog,
I compared a PSE and a Fabspeed in person at the same time. In another session with a fellow rennlister, I also was able to hear the GHL before I settled on the Fabspeed. The PSE was just too tame for my tastes and the GHL even more so. I installed the Fabspeed myself. It was simple; took about three hours and I am not mechanically inclined. Some have mentioned that the Fabspeed is too loud. I don't feel so. I think the sound when you start up the car is just too sweet to miss.
No matter what you choose, try to hear the exhausts in person, the sound clips, although good, do not replicate live sound.
Joe is right. You should hear the choices in person. I heard the PSE on a car at the dealer and just loved it (purchased immediately without hearing others). Not a big fan of the other (based on sound clips, postings, etc.) exhausts even though they are just as good (RUF a bit pricey, GHL not quite as good a sound note as PSE, and Fabspeed is great for those who want loud).
But remember, everything on this board that is a "what do you think of ______" type of question is answered based on subjective criteria. To each his own. That's why there are so many responses to mull through because there are that many subjective answers. Besides, it would be pretty boring if EVERYBODY had the exact same sound? That what makes us all unique PCar owners. If there was no diversity........PCA and others places like this would not exist.
Good luck and know that you will probably not regret any choice you make.
Happy Motoring!
jbdmd - Assuming that you don't want the switch put in, and most don't when done as an after market install, you can take it to any (muffler) shop to get them swapped out. It is a fairly straight forward swap. I took mine to the local Midas shop. $75.00 and 1 1/2 hours later, my mufflers were installed.
While I agree with you that $75 and 1 1/2 later is a good deal, I would caution you on one thing. If the dealer installs it (for $20 more) then it is covered under warranty for 2 years. Either way, still great to have installed period
I had mine installed last week without electronics, who would want to turn it off. The best deal was at Suncoast Porsche ( a sponsor here) for $1550 to my door. Had it in 3 days. $153 to install at my dealer. It is great
I am getting ready to do a muffler upgrade .... I am looking for something louder than stock but not too loud. i was going with Fabspeed because my understanding is that Fabspeed is quieter than PSE... is this correct?
CarreraMark,
I did alot of research and listening before I installed PSE last week. In my own opnion, GHL is a little too tame, not as loud as PSE. PSE is awesome! A little raspier at idle but close to stock. Unbelievably beautiful when aceelerating hard or under load. Great melody while cruising. No resonance and does not interfere with cruising with windows up. Fabspeed is louder than PSE and a little too loud for my taste. Bypass pipes are way too loud for the street in my opnion. I got the PSE from BrandyWine for $1499. Had it installed at the dealer for $70 without electronics. You will not need them! Whatever you decide they are all good options. Hopefully, you can listen before you purchase, however, I don't think you would ever be disappointed with PSE. Good luck.
PSE has "the sound" you want for your porsche... Fabspeed mufflers have a one-dimensional (but loud) sound... some people like them... but the PSE is simply awesome.
