Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Evidently it was the cables for the shifter that had broken---good call jetskied.
Leading evidence: 'cables' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'cables' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check tranny oil level' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

My car had its engine replaced due to the RMS problem and during the process, the mechanic did not attach the shifter cables properly.

PS If the car was leaking while it was worked on it is highly likely the tech would have noticed it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My brother has a 1999 996 C2 with 40k miles. The car was just in for a major service 2 weeks ago. While driving home yesterday he realized that the car suddenly could not be driven in any gear but 1st. It will shift into 2nd but does not respond---he cannot even shift into any other gears---there seems to be a "blockage". Of course the dealer's service department is not open today (Sat). He also just discovered a softball sized puddle of fluid on the garage floor directly under the shifter. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.
There should not be fluid under the shifter. The fluid on the floor maybe the tranny has a crack in the case or the numb nut who serviced it did not tighten the tranny and the plug came loose. If it win't shift it may be the cables for the shifter broke, but with fluid all over the floor I'm thinking you have a bigger problem. It needs to be towed in.
The car was towed in this morning. Evidently it was the cables for the shifter that had broken---good call jetskied. Anyway, the dealer has quoted a fix-it price of $900---does this sound reasonable?
Was there any consideration that maybe the problem was caused when the car was just serviced? and therefore the dealer should take care of it and apologize?
The car is out of warranty. Nothing was said of the puddle---yet. Isn't this something that should have been picked up during the major ($1200) service?
It is very difficult to know anything for certain in this situation. The fact that the car was just serviced does not mean that the technician caused the problem. Nor does it mean that they didn't. (Though I think it's only fair to give them the benefit of the doubt unless there's evidence to the contrary.) It's hard to know these things when you are there and close to it, and more so when you're just reading about it
PS If the car was leaking while it was worked on it is highly likely the tech would have noticed it. Once noticed, he would be paid more on the car for repairing it, regardless of whether it was warranty work or not. So it's in his interest to notice it and fix it.
This same thing happened to me. My car had its engine replaced due to the RMS problem and during the process, the mechanic did not attach the shifter cables properly. I lost control of my gears coming off a freeway!
Did the service dept. work on the transmission or the RMS area? That might put them near the scene of the crime, so to speak.
