Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello! Ive been thinkin about intake options for my car:
1- Airetek (cone air filter)
2- Fabspeed Cold air intake with BMC filter
3- Just the BMC filter
Ive used to have airetek but never dyno it or compared to another 996. Now with my new car, I still didnt decide what to do...
Any opinios is apreciated!!!
Thanks,
Conrado
There is little to nothing to be gained by using an air intake... in fact, you may end up losing some power. Not worth spending the money on any of those items.
i heartily disagree! you can gain some excellent sound by adding an aftermarket intake. also, you can gain power if you add in the appropriate exhaust and ECU mods.
yes, you can lose power, but you're not necessarily going to, and you might only lose it in some circumstances.
i have the cone filter intake and the sound of it is well worth any loss of power i get in the city. on the highway, it isn't hurting HP, at the very least i have equal HP to stock or possibly 2 or 3 more. and the sound, well, holy cow does it sound good!!!

I completly agree - the sound alone is worth the price... Let's get real for a moment, daily we are driving around town and inner city - not everyone is hitting the track, for one reason or another - the Fabspeed Cold Air kit and well worth the $200.00 - think of it as an early oil service...
I've followed the intake issues closely on both the Porsche and BMW boards over the last several years. I've concluded that the best all round intake for performance as well as protecting you engine from dirt is:
The Porsche Stock Intake
Sorry, not a very sexy answer, but there just aren't any gains to be had here, and even if you're looking for auditory improvements, you are likely reducing filtering performance.
Aftermarket intakes are a coin toss...but these ones look so good...

And they are suppose to give you a power increase too along with an ECU upgrade...they have a dyno inshop and are 20 minutes away from me...might give them a try soon.
I would agree with my fellow Targa enthusisast...it really sounds better..I really didn't like the stock sewing machine sound...and mine hasn't hurt me at the track either.
No power gain waste of money. Have you heard of the plug trick. I seen it on the forum. You get a plug that blocks the air from going in the air box muffler. It makes the sound better and its free. Look it up. I did one better and made a ABS pipe & plug 1 1/2 inch and wraped the end with electric tape and put a o ring on it . Then remove the muffler and insert this in the hole. i also removed the plastic screeen in front of the MAF. It works and its like getting a fabspeed for $5. Use the rest of the money on a GHL,PSE for real sound.
you're kind of disagreeing with yourself here... PSE doesn't get you additional HP.
just because something doesn't gain you HP doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile IMHO. anything that adds to your driving pleasure is worth the money, so the cost of any intake change that makes you like the car better is worth the money.
I truly hear a differnce and also went as far as placing my sound meter 1 meter from the exhaust before and after and the differnce was 2.1 kl higher - personally considering the car we are all in, $200.00 is a drop in the porsche bucket. ... Keep the love alive amigos....
Here is an interesting read:

IMO, unless you have a large displacement motor w/ a poorly designed intake system or forced induction, then an aftermarket intake will not be worthwhile for power gains.
However, if I were to get an aftermarket intake, then I would opt for a cold-air intake. And even still, if the factory intake is well designed for cold-air induction already, then a CAI may be pointless.
Michael.
My car came with the Evolution Motorsports Highflow Intake (

- scroll to the bottom of the page) and I've talked to the EVOMS guys several times and they absolutely stand behind their horsepower increase claims for this unit and have the dyno curve on their site to back it up.
Since my car came with the unit already installed, I couldn't do a before/after comparison, but at a minimum the sound is great! Several other owners who did add it themselves report a quicker throttle response as well.
Just more fuel for the fire...
