Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I'll start this off.
Sometimes I need a big car to do something and I want her to take my 911 so I can use her A8. You would think I was trying to trade her for a 1980 Buick Skylark! Says its TOO BUMPY, TOO HARD TO GET IN AND OUT OF and ATTRACTS TOO MUCH ATTENTION!
But even funnier keeping this on a mechanical issue. After removing the steering wheel to do some work, she now refuses to drive it until I have a mechanic check it out.
Anyone else have these issues?
My wife has always been supportive of my Porsche fascination. She didn't know it applied to our dog also.
We have a standard poodle that has been off leash trained. When he was about 18 months old, wife was walking him in the neighbourhood when he leaves her side (very unusual) and runs to a car that was approaching the stop sign. He proceeds to go the passenger door and look at the man driving.
Wife had to explain that her husband drives a 911 and so the dog that it was daddy because the car was also a 911.....
She no longer questions my 911 fascination.
(Interesting about my dog is he has only been in the 911 once because as a very large standard poodle, he just does not fit. The one time he was in there, his legs were by the shifter, and he was in back seat).
My wife is not a Porsche fan, nor any kind of car fan for that matter. No shows or track functions for her. She won't even take a ride in the Turbo. She doesn't like it or understand the fascination and freely admits it. Zero support for my hobby, but she loves to travel, so if kind of works out.
My wife won't drive the 996. Similarly, she's worried about the attention it gets or damaging it. It's taken me 30 years to move her from Dodge Colt to a Golf R. Cooly(if that's a word), she won't give up the R. Heads up display with speedo and nav directions. Map on the dashboard. Blind spot lights that you can actually see. 6MT and fast! It's a cool car. So, realizing that she won't drive the 996, the suspension is now tuned to how I like it instead of a compromise to make sure she's comfortable in it. MY car, and she gives me zero grief about it. Funny thing is that years before I met her, she was looking to buy a Corvette split window coupe on her brothers recommendation. Still don't have the story of how she went from almost Corvette to Dodge Colt. But that's OK.
Ha ha, I prefer the challenge over pleading the 5th amendment.
I have a 2 year plan where I play Youtube videos of GT3s at night before bedtime to place subliminal images into her thoughts for my ultimate goal of buying a GT3. Its a slow process but its working
It is amusing how a Porsche and a girl can attract so much attention. I would think that those guys would be more concentrated on getting their own Porsche than hitting on married women getting out of a Porsche!
Wife doesn't care nor understand my fixation with cars, period. She refuses to ride in either of my toys because she says I drive them like a race car(I don't). I have asked her to do a ride along at AutoX which she "gracefully" refused. Nice thing is when I walk by and say "I'm buying new tires/wheels/ADS module/etc" she says ok while never looking up.
Ive done nothing but eat, sleep and breathe cars and trucks my whole life. Ive known my wife since the 6th grade and Im 47, been married for 17 years. She didnt really love the Porsche until very recently, I made her drive it home from dinner on date night. She really seemed to enjoy the drive and I could see a little spark of realization of what the attraction is. It was the first time she had driven a stick in decades probably, so that was maybe some of it. But she really seemed to enjoy the handling and throttle response. So if your wife doesnt get it, MAKE her drive it and maybe that will do it. My trick was, we went to dinner and I had a few bourbons and so she HAD to drive us home LOL
I got super lucky in that my wife is also really into sports cars and understood my midlife crisis/bucket list plea. She daily drives an E89 Z4 manual and we both knew we really don't need two sports cars in addition to an Evoque Dynamic and two motorcycles, but she still gave me her blessing anyway. She also really loves the people we've met from the local PCA chapter and the events they throw, as it gets us out and about on weekends more often. What she DOESN'T care for so much is how I've reverted right back to a teenager when it comes to buying toy 911's, Porsche t-shirts, Porsche Puma shoes that match the car, coffee table books, posters for the garage wall, etc.!
Wife : Hey honey I saw a very nice Porsche today !!
Me : On yeah, which model ?
Wife : yes, it was blue.
But, we have two sons, so she's getting better but man that learning curve is steep.
Mine likes it, doesn't understand it. Won't drive it as its LHD and we live in a RHD country.
She will come on runs with the local Porsche chapter, but the twisty roads and speeds make it not her favorite pastime.
She's supportive without getting in my way, I've got cars and motorcycles and she deals with it. She also jumps on the back of a road bike from time to time.
I deal with her attraction to shoes and handbags in the same way, sometimes buying her some
Our secret is we are each's second marriage and keep our money separate apart from the joint house stuff.
Gee...I'm reading this and think I must have the best wife. My wife doesn't drive and has absolutely no interest in cars. She was with me when we bought the 996 at the Porsche dealer. She actually pushed me into it. She has always supported by passion. She doesn't understand it but has always been supportive. In fact, I have a fair number of internal combustion toys including a couple boats and an ATV. She comes along be it the cars, boats or ATV. Been married for over 30 years and we were married young. She is not into handbags or jewelry. She has only a few expensive interests: travelling, the house and furnishings (30 years of marriage and 12 living room sets lol) and a love for kitchen gadgets/appliances!
I'm very lucky....
Great stories.
My wife likes that i enjoy the 996. I think she also likes that I have had it for nearly 23 years and take care of it. She used to love driving it until I added GT3 seats and she couldn't raise the seats to see over the dash. So I made some foam cushions for her but she said it wasn't the same.
She also likes that I enjoy the car on the track, but made sure I outfitted the car properly with safety equipment.
She even participated in a PCA track day as a novice to see what it was about. Not her thing, but she did ride shotgun with me during the day at speed in the instructor group. I wasn't sure how she would handle the speed and forces. My buddies were worried that she would exit the car after the first session with me and say it was to damn fast and dangerous and she didnt want me to do it anymore. Instead, she actually enjoyed it, understood the rythym on the track, got to know the guys and realized they werent nuts, appreciated the handling, brakes, safety equipment and said she was cool with it.
But what she doesn't understand is that every xmas all i ask for are 996 parts.
The day my 911 showed up was on the same day my long-time cleaning lady comes. Without missing a step, she walked right past it and said to me: "someone having a midlife crisis?"
My wife drives and enjoys our 996 cab, but I definitely drive it much more than her. We also have a 70 GTO convertible she never drives. I want a third convertible (early Miata) and that is an ongoing persuasion project I am currently not sure if I am ahead on or not...
When my wife asked me about my fixation with cars, I told her that some men have one car and many women. I have one woman and many cars. I think it is a fair trade. She liked the excuse and never bothered me about my cars again. So I now have 10 cars, 996 challenging for the 1st place..
Not married but my S/O while not being a car person, has always supported my hobby. She refers to my car events as a 'SausageFest' or 'Car Nerd' meet but it's all in good fun. Ten to fifteen years ago , females at car meets were still somewhat rare. Now that's it's more common, I'm thinking about inviting her again to something.
Same girl 17 years apart.
I am very lucky. My wife loves Porsche’s, even has two of her own 996s, one is a 4.0 FSI Stage II and the other is a FSI R42. She lets me drive them whenever I want. I let her drive my 996 Cab and 996 Turbo when she wants to. She even helped me assemble the 4.0 motor in the Cab just before we drove it from TN to Rennsport reunion in the fall of 2023!
My wife likes our 996 and drives it on occassion. She does not like going fast or winding roads however, so if I want to go fast I need to go alone. She also supported me when I was time trialing in a 240Z a few years ago. She is a keeper.
I'll call myself lucky here, my Better Half loves the 996 and is an exec in the auto industry and daily drives a M340i, plus a manual Wrangler w/ wind up windows, a Golf R manual and the new Carrera T is theoretically "hers"
