I do not have an oil stain on my garage floor but I do need to fill in between oil change like teflon said
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

i took my car in today for a pre-purchase inspection since i'm selling it and they reported that i have an RMS leak! i've never noticed any oil on the ground at all. they also reported that i have a camshaft bearing that's leaking. i've never had to add oil to the car between oil changes so there must not be much of a leak at either place. both things are covered under warranty thankfully!
i've been all over the place about what to replace it with! the latest entries:
'54-62 corvette
'64.5-69 mustang
'54-65 356
i've also been thinking about getting a used jeep wrangler as an every day car and searching around for one of the above cars that's in decent shape but that needs some restoration work. i've got a hankering to get my hands dirty. it's been too long since i've worked on a car!!!
Tef: I race a 67 Shelby Mustang, and I can tell you this: after a few hours of wrestling it around a race track, getting in the 996 to go home is like getting in a hot tub after a day of skiing.
u might miss your Porsche.

decisions decisions...
why not keep the p-car and get a late '60s MGB, plenty of quirks to dirty your hands, cheap and fun, you could probably pick one up for the cost of gt3 seats...
oh yeah, my first convertible, a 66 MGB roadster. Bought for $1800 in 1987 and sold in 1995 for $5000 (after restoring the interior and rebuilding the engine among other things.) A car definitely designed with DIY in mind! (and constantly in need too!)
how can someone tell if they have RMS problem?? I do not have an oil stain on my garage floor but I do need to fill in between oil change like teflon said
keoni, you have to put the car up on a lift and really examine it carefully. like i said, there were no oil stains on my garage floor, but i had the RMS leak, plus a camshaft bearing leak! you should be able to see oil stains in the area of the RMS even if there's nothing on your floor. when i had the winter tires put on back in december, i looked over the underbody of the car while it was on the lift, but i didn't notice anything. however, the car was really dirty underneath then so it would have masked the oil on the engine block.
from the perspective of my 996, i'm selling it for financial reasons. my company was recently acquired and they're doing massive layoffs, so i'd like to reduce my expenses. i was one of the few offered a "permanent" position, but even my new manager said she really doesn't know how "permanent" any new jobs will be. i'm also going to relocate somewhere next spring after i get married (december), so i'm saving up money for the move so that me and my fiancee can take a couple of months to look for new jobs and a new house in the new city without having to worry about paying bills. lastly, i may be opening up my own car restoration business on the side, so i would like to have extra money to put into that. my fiancee is ok with the idea as long as we take that into account when we search for our new house and get something with a large garage. i was amazed when i asked her about it and she agreed that it would be ok as long as i had the cash to buy the cars and parts for the restorations!!!
WOW! She definitely sounds like a keeper (fiancee). So where are you moving to?
Sounds like the p-car must go. You should look for used Subie Sti or even a VW R32 as your daily driver, so you keep that zippy feel.
Had a Wrangler for years, great vehicle, fun to mod., great for around town, but not so much for longer trips...
yeah, she's a keeper! she's even ok with me buying one of those old 50s/60s cars! she isn't really ok with a subie, hates the way they look. and i'm too big for the R32 (6'4 270 pds, real big shoulders!). i've sat in a GTI before and it was too small, ended up buying a passat instead. i think i may get a used wrangler (for around $15K) as my daily driver and get one of the classics to restore, drive for a while, then sell. i'm all over the place about the replacement car right now. it's been a really tough decision.
i'm looking at moving to charleston, SC. i've heard great things about the city, and i need a change from the northeast. i've lived here all my life!
Sorry you need to give up the 996. I gave up my 1997 Targa for similar reasons and, as my wife will tell you, all I did was grouse about it for 5 years (even while I drove the Boxster S for 3 years). If you are like me, sooner or later you will just have to get back in a 911. Fortunately, my wife understands me and supports me in my Porsche-passion (but it didn't hurt that she got a Cayenne S before I got my new Targa). Meanwhile, hope you find something fun to play with along with your transportation. Good luck with your work, marriage and cars!
sorry to hear that
but I do have some oil stains on the bottom of my engine. I did my 15k service about month or two agao and the service dept didn't say anything. Besides the stain the car runs great..
I might just be paranoid
Born in NJ, lived in Mass, moved to SC when I was 10, now in NC. You'll love the South. Charleston is a really neat city too, you'll like that. I visit often (romantic weekends). Good luck with the move, the job, the future wife! I've been perusing the board today looking at basic 996 information and I see that you've been through a lot trying to sell your car; hopefully it will (has) happened!
