I checked the exclusions (glancingly) and saw this for their "Diamond" plan:
Leading evidence: 'Check exclusions (glancingly) and saw this' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check exclusions (glancingly) and saw this' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

...and someone on this board had a new engine and gearbox replaced by a 3-rd party warranty co., so it depends on who's you buy!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
i was wondering if most people who own 996 without warrany purchase an aftermarket extended warranty. I got a qoute from one of those online vendors and the rate seems to be very good.
$1199 w/$100 Deductable for 36month/50K miles.

I went to the local Porsche dealer who sold me an extended warranty they use when they sell Audi's and VW's. Mine is a 2001 with 41k, so I purchased a 3yr/75000k plan for $1900. I get the car serviced there anyway and they honor the Porsche warranty until it expires and anything Porsche does not cover this warranty does. $100 deductible, everything covered, prorated refund if I sell the car or I can transfer to new owner.
Be
very
careful with these aftermarket online warranty places. I have a 99 996 and have looked at the same deals. Most of those incredible deals are pretty shady. Do a search for their name on consumer report groups, you'll find a lot of them are semi-scams. Research places like
http://www.extended-warranty.info
and
http://www.autowarrantyreviews.org/
. Those are just examples and may be a front for sponsored warranty groups themselves.
Contact the Porsche dealers and get a copy of their terms to compare to whatever it is you're looking at. Although much more expensive, you will quickly notice that some of these discount warranties don't cover a lot of things, such as oils and fluids when something is replaced, and other sneaky stuff like that. Make sure you read ALL the fine print on what is covered, item by item. Don't forget to check if it's transferable. Check simple things like if these people even answer their phones, which some don't.
If you're curious, I haven't decided if/what warranty to get either.
I just got an '01 C4 with 16000 miles and 1 yr left on warranty. 1Source cost was higher by about $300, presumably for the "4" AWD nature of the car. I checked the exclusions (glancingly) and saw this for their "Diamond" plan:
"""Seals And Gaskets:
Seals and gaskets are covered only in conjunction with the repair of above listed covered components. Seepage of seals and gaskets is NOT covered."""
Might be a consideration since many dread or have experienced the RMS syndrome, which sounds like it would not be covered.
Also, their maintenance requirements state that vehicle must be maintained up to "severe use" standards..oil changes every 5k miles or 6 months. Not a big deal and Porsche owners obviously tend to maintain but for an occasional sunny day driver it might not be desired, and synthetics don't require such changing. Also for a DIYer, how can you prove you changed it if they decide to get nasty? Prolly other maintenance standards you should check out as well..I just poped in for a few minutes.
I am interested in such coverage after my warranty expires but echo the aforementioned suggestions to look at the fine print..not just the testimonials..
I purchased a warranty from Platinum warranty and they never want to pay your claim. The claim has been in accounts payable for 6 months. I would not bother with the warranty.
i just echo everyone's warnings-if you search the posts, you will find various board members who speak of worthless long term warranties, that refused to pay claims. be careful.
...and someone on this board had a new engine and gearbox replaced by a 3-rd party warranty co., so it depends on who's you buy! i went with apco. they're owned by ford motor co. and they pay on claims. my advice, go with a co. that's backed by a known quantity.
As my dealer explained to me when I asked him about extended warranties, another issue to look into is whether the warranty company will pay the same labor rate and hours as the dealer charges for a given job. Many companies don't and the customer gets caught in the middle.
i had my engine and gearbox replaced by a 3rd party extended warranty company. it took 1k in attorney fees and 4 months for them to finally agree to it though.
I did quite a bit of research on the sites listed above as well as at various dealerships, and still ended up purchasing the 1sourceautowarranty as well. $1540 for 60K/3yrs and I had 21K miles on my 99' C2 at the time.
I specifically asked about the RMS in relation to the gasket clause. They informed me that the Porsche RMS was part of the drive train and therefore not part of their gasket exclusionary clause, so it would indeed be covered. I called them at least half a dozen times with questions, and the reps that I worked with seemed extremely knowledgable. I did not bother trying to get him to put it in writing because there's a clause that stated that any e-mail correspondence would not be binding over the main contract agreement anyways.
The one thing they would not budge on is the oil change interval of every 5,000miles. I don't put that much mileage on, so I was willing to accept that requirement.
I talked to a couple other guys on-line about this company, and neither had anything negative to say except that they don't compensate for the full dealer service labor rate. I think they only cover like an $80/hr rate vs. the $100+ that the Porsche dealer charges.
In the end, no one can guarantee that any 3rd party extended warranty company will cover all your repairs. Just do your research and choose the one you feel most comfortable with. Good luck.
Yep, you have to pay for the difference. Then again, you can goto any mechanic w/ the warranty. You should be able to find a non-dealer Porsche service shop that charges around $80/hr.
Hi all,
I was very skeptical about extendeds too. I bought one for my BMW through warrantybynet.com. It has been used twice in 2 years, without many issues.
First claim they paid was about 2K to them, and 300 to me. Some parts only were covered to a certain amount, and I covered the rest (for example, the A/C compressor was $700, but company only covered $650 of that, which was their max). Also, there was a $100 deductible in that amount. The company even covered the tax! That's great. The do not do that in all states however.
Second claim recently was control arms and bushings, which not even their own Certified warranty will cover. Yes, they covered this item, however, as above, not all costs were covered. BMW has a policy of "automatically" replacing some other items on that job, even if the part is not broken or overly worn. Hence, the warranty company will not opt to replace a "good" item. Understandable. I authorized it anyway, and had to pay about $400 out of pocket, but company covered almost $700 of the job without issue. NO tax covered, b/c it was NJ. The first was in NY. I live close to the border. I have another 4 years and 50K miles left on the warranty, and have already benefitted more than I paid, which was just under 2K.
just my 2 cents,
regards,
I bought the full package from Warranty Direct 1 year ago (99 cab). The repair shop deals directly with the warranty company (pre-approves the work/$$) and pays the shop directly. Had two repairs (fuel pump $~$750 and alarm/keys $450) and there were no issues.
I think WarrantyDirect may be the most reputable and reliable 3rd party, but I passed on them for my 996 because their cost was signficantly higher. I ended up going with 1SourceAutoWarranty. I ended up paying around $3k for 4yr/100k w/ $0 deductable.
I haven't had any work done, but there are a few minor things I'll have to take the car into the shop for soon. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping they're cover without any hassles.
I got a warrantybynet.com warranty. They were very easy to work with and were prompt with teh vehicle inspection. Although I haven't had a claim yet, they seem to be pretty good. I hope they cover an RMS if it happens!!!
