Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Have you checked the potentiometer lever, it is linked to the cylinder guide pin on left side ram.

Sometimes it get disconnected when doing the rebuild of the rams.

I have PIWIS3 running and can run re-calibrate, it just won't complete.

How about manually putting it in the opposite state, using the crank-backup and with battery disconnected, and then trying the PIWIS calibration again?

If it's not latched, then I can get the roof to open on the key/button or PIWIS3 command, but I cannot get it to move in the opposite direction using those controls.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The hydraulics on my roof failed at the beginning of the summer. Perfect timing! So I spent much of the summer rebuilding the pistons. Works great!
However, now I have another problem. The control module seems to have convinced itself that the roof is up when it's down and down when it's up. I cannot complete the cycle to relearn its calibration because something will end up out-of-sync in the process because of this.
I've been messing with this for a while now and I'm at my whit's end.
What to do? Suggestions??
It's a 1999 Cabriolet, so the earlier system.

I have PIWIS3 running and can run re-calibrate, it just won't complete. The cover tries to close when it should open or the latch doesn't open when it should. The module thinks the roof is up when it's down and down when it's up.

Hmm. How about manually putting it in the opposite state, using the crank-backup and with battery disconnected, and then trying the PIWIS calibration again?
I've been trying that. I have the roof hydraulics connected in such a way that I can disconnect it and power it from a small battery, so I can position it where I want it and then reconnect it. If I have the roof all the way down and the lid open, when I try to close the roof, the lid will move to the closed position and stop short when I would be expecting the lid to move to the open position. If I hae the lid fully raised, then it will try to move down without unlatching the roof. If it's not latched, then I can get the roof to open on the key/button or PIWIS3 command, but I cannot get it to move in the opposite direction using those controls. The lid will just try to close and stop short. Very frustrating....

Don't think so. I never really had all of this apart. I simply removed the hydraulic pump and rams from the car and rebuilt the rams.
ChatGPT has told me that the system can get confused, thinking that the indicators are backwards and then start reversing them, thus confusing itself. Interesting theory. I've never seen anything independently to support this.
Next step, unless anyone else has a better idea, is to go back into PIWIS and see what the individual sensor values are. See if they make sense. If they do, then I don't know what to do after that.

Have you checked the potentiometer lever, it is linked to the cylinder guide pin on left side ram. This lever is what controls/coordinates the tops functions when opening/closing. Sometimes it get disconnected when doing the rebuild of the rams.
I feel your frustration, sorry I don't have any wose words for you. I'm sure my '99 cab's top will start acting wonky (it already has, in truth). I wish there was an easy way to just make it manual, so I could flip it up and down like my Mom's '92 Miata.
