I use about 3 inches of boards under the right rear wheel -- it was just enough for me, but I'm not the biggest guy in the world either.

Use a strap wrench that you can buy at Sears or Home depot.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Use a strap wrench that you can buy at Sears or Home depot. Dont worry about the torque spec. I have been useing that method for years. Even Mercedes has similar filter and I used it on thoes kinds of cars.
You need a 74mm filter wrench. The stamped metal ones from the autoparts stores are not always the best fit. I bought this one from

. They had it to me very fast.
Chris
I just did mine last weekend with a strap wrench. Here are a few tips from my specific experience.
1) Make sure you get the car up a little - its a tight fit under there! I use about 3 inches of boards under the right rear wheel -- it was just enough for me, but I'm not the biggest guy in the world either.
2) My oil plug and filter were pretty tightly on there -- I assume the heat of the last however many miles and road crud had created a good tight seal.
3) For the oil plug (use 8mm allen wrench), I needed more leverage than I could create by simply lying on the ground and pulling. This will sound silly, but it worked. With your legs out to the right of the car, put your right hand on the wrench and your left hand on the bumperette next to the license plate. pull with your right hand on the wrench and push with your left on the bumperette.
3) Strap wrench will work just fine on the oil filter -- it is a heavy plastic though with internal threads so be careful to keep the force from your wrench level -- i.e just twist the filter with your wrench, don't have any force pulling it down. The only way I could get my filter to budge was to put my legs out to the left of the car (yes, I know it sounds funny, but when I was on the right it didn't work). Get both your hands on the wrench (right palm up and grab, left palm facing down and grab so your on both sides of the handle) and pull firmly toward you.
Everything will work just fine -- you just might need to be patient and try a few different ways. Have fun!
