Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Welcome to my first post. I am lost. I searched the archives and didn't see any thing related so here goes.
The patient: '01 996 C4 w/factory aero & sports suspension Milage: just under 21,000
The problem: When the engine is cold and the wheel is turned all the way to the right (most noticeable when reversing) my poor baby makes a terrible thumping noise with slight vibration. The noise sounds like it is coming from the front. The first time it happened I thought a flat tire or I have a cat tangled in the wheel. While neither occurred the problem remains unsolved. This started in it's second winter ('02-'03) and has become more pronounced as time passes. Previously the air temp had to be in the 30s now it can be reproduced if the temp is 45 or so. Initially the wheel had to be turned ALL the way now it does not need to be turned as far. The car very rarely thumps once it has been warmed up though if the air temp is cold enough (20s) it can happen. This winter was particularly bad as it would thump making right forward turns. I haven't noticed it thumping when turning left but I always back up to the right from my parking space. The service tech was finally about to reproduce the problem this past winter but to no avail.
What's been tried: In '03 when the problem could not be reproduced the service tech replaced the driveshaft. The steering rack was replaced a short time later (just didn't feel right). And this winter the struts were replaced in a 6 week odyssey.
Help?! Anyone else have this problem? Solutions? Guesses? Also today we found that my car (yes with the not highly regarded stock cr-220 w/digital sound processor and cd changer) was not wired for the speed dependent volume control. As best I can remember when I put in my build order speed dependent volume was standard with the package. Did I need to pay off someone in the factory? And as a final note. The more I read this board the more scared I become. Should I be thanking gods that my car has an engine? As a first time Porsche owner the threads that I've glimpsed are not very comforting.
Thanks for any help!
