So, take that head to the machine shop, have them remove all the exhaust bolts, repair any bad holes with timeserts.

the rest of the repair cost is all going to be in Labor as is 10 hours to R&R engine and 10 hours to R&R the head...plus necessary gaskets and fluids...( ~$5k)

IMHO, if considering an engine repair, make sure to get a qualified Porsche engine tech to figure out what happened and the full damage report.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

As I noted in my previous post, I have a bent value and busted head thanks to a broken valve spring. (No, I wasn't redlining it at the time. In the few months I owned it, I never once redlined it. Does that raise legal issues with the dealership that sold it? That's for another day.) My shop is in the process of giving me an estimate for bank 2 and full rebuild, but given the numbers thrown around, the estimate is wildly out of the ordinary from everything I've read (and what reddit is telling me, but I trust you guys more).
So, I'm either going to sell it as a roller or take it somewhere different. Can you all suggest reasonable and competent mechanic that can rebuild bank 2 (or if I get really frisky dump in a new engine) in the Northeast Corridor area? Would prefer someplace within 200 miles of NYC.
Bent valve, assuming you did hot destroy the piston, should not cost as much as a full rebuild.
$2,000 for R/R engine
$1,500 for R/R said head
$3500 for a new porsched head with valves.
$1,000 other stuff
so, $8,500 all in?
IMHO, if considering an engine repair, make sure to get a qualified Porsche engine tech to figure out what happened and the full damage report. Knowing this could help mitigate any further problems down the road from a partial/quick repair done now, or could show a partial top end rebuild is all thats needed...
Don't know exactly what happened here from the few details we've gotten. Just spit balling here, Off the top of my head, a broke valve spring that allows the valve to hang down far enough for piston to bend the valve has a good chance of the spring retainer keepers getting dislodged and allowing the valve to drop way into the combustion chamber doing damage to piston, cyl, possibly bending a rod and or damage to crank... Actually, even if valve doesn't complete drop into chamber all the above damage could still be possible.
Are the heads off engine now, any pics..?
Idk what shop youre currently at - but i would recommend south shore performance. Bill @ SSP is currently doing my pads/tensioners (along with other things) and hes incredible. He could at the very least point you in the right direction

I say it is the VERY VERY BEST SCENARIO for an internal failure !!!
You just need a Valve Spring and a Valve !! ..........Then just reassemble with new gaskets and Cam pads and 4th-5th chains....and be good to go !!!
Of course you may want to take the opportunity the engine removed provides to replace some hard to get to maintenance items also .. to take advantage of your very good fortune of the failure ...
Recap :::: Root Cause >>>> " Broken Valve Spring " ( $16 ) >>> Collateral damage >>> " Bent intake valve " ($43)
Rennlist 996 Forum saves another 50K mile M96 from the Morgue !!
Well, all your exhaust bolts are broken. So, take that head to the machine shop, have them remove all the exhaust bolts, repair any bad holes with timeserts. Clean up the head, lap the valves, replace the busted springs and valve, check out ALL other valve springs. Check to see if you need the surface cut at all. Preferably none.... Get a new set of head gaskets, intake gaskets, exhaust gaskets etc... and put them back.
More than $1,000 but less than a full rebuild.
Best of luck to you.
Assuming from your statements previously ,the Shop you are at currently, doesn't want to "repair" your engine ....
They want to do " all or nothing" as in a full rebuild or engine replacement to lessen their liability ...
If so, then that is very unfortunate as most Shops don't like to "go behind" other Shops in repairs...
Maybe ask your current Shop if they will do it IF you waive their "Liability " ?
You have less than $100 damage on a 50k mile engine...
the rest of the repair cost is all going to be in Labor as is 10 hours to R&R engine and 10 hours to R&R the head...plus necessary gaskets and fluids...( ~$5k)
I did a very similar top end repair on my 50k miles M96 17 years and 93k miles ago and still going strong this very day...
So a quick update: I've told my current garage ain't no way I was paying $55k so they gave me a nice (I'm not being sarcastic, it was nice) kiss-off letter. Two other local Porsche mechanics have looked at the same photos you've seen, asked some questions, and have gone, "Where's the damage?" One said "We Might [be] able to get you of this a lot cheaper than you think," and that given what they know about the engine, they quoted a $25k complete rebuild. The other mechanic was like -- I can get a rebuilt engine with similar miles for around $10,000, what the hell?
Thank you again for all your help. You've probably saved me a ton of money.
