Occasionally a well meaning mechanic may over tighten the bolts hoping to stop the leak which paradoxically gets worse

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

2 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

POST 2Original post

They aren't actually gaskets per se, Porsche uses a special silicon sealant on the cam cover. Remember to use the correct torque (10 ft/lb) and sequence as they will not tolerate overtightening. Occasionally a well meaning mechanic may over tighten the bolts hoping to stop the leak which paradoxically gets worse . This info comes from the 996 service manual. You can get the service manuals from Porsche, they used to be a couple of hundred dollars but now they are quite a bit more.
