The 996 is much more forgiving than other models in this regard, after about a week for example it disables the remote lock and you have to use your key to unlock the car.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm going to be away from the 996 for about 5 weeks at a time pretty soon. Will I need to get a battery charger for the car for that period of time? How long can I safely leave the 996 without running her and not have battery problems when I come back?

POST 2Original post

Hi Matterhorn, I stored my car for the winter and asked the same thing. The most recommended answer was to get a Porsche trickle charger (Charge-o-Mat) which you can leave plugged into your cigarette lighter slot and which automatically tops up the charge on your battery whenever it senses that it starts to drain. I have used it this winter and found it a great "fire and forget" type of tool--no fuss, no muss (and no need to worry about overcharging). I have been told that it greatly extends battery life, too. Not a bad investment for $59.99 (I got mine for 45.00 off ebay). Do a search on "porsche charge-o-mat" or something. They also have it at Suncoast Porsche. since your car is a 99, you will be working off an older battery.......I recommend one of two things.......Disconnect the battery or get the Porsche factory battery minder............ The 996 is much more forgiving than other models in this regard, after about a week for example it disables the remote lock and you have to use your key to unlock the car. This is a battery conservation feature. 5 weeks is going to cycle your battery a bit deeper than normal, which will play havok with an older battery.
