Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone know of any place to buy internal trans parts for a non turbo car? Seems they don't exist.

POST 2Original post

Other than the differential Porsche does not sell transmission parts only exchange transmissions. There are a few 3rd party companies that work on 996 transmissions though.

POST 3Original post

Jim, Apparently the 996 tranny shares a lot of parts with the G50 so you can get parts. The big issue is having a press big enough to dismantle it. Mine is currently being rebuilt in Texas. I can get you contact information if you wish. As an aside, I love the engine swap program but the 996 transmission program sucks. An $8k tranny swap to fix a syncro!! In the long run this is going to be a much bigger issue for 996 owners that the RMS everyone likes to bitch about. Jim

POST 4Original post

Hi, someone in the factory in Stuttgart told me that GETRAG will start offering reconditioned transmissions soon. Unfortunately, GETRAG will not sell parts, so you can't have it reconditioned elsewhere. Interesting you mention that the G96/00 and G96/01 have many parts in common with the G50. I've heard this somewhere else before. From the few drawings I have seen they don't seem to have an awful lot in common. Maybe parts of the synchromesh? The G96/50, G96/51 and G/96-88 being used in the GT3, TT and GT2 are of course G50 based. Cheers Uwe

POST 5Original post

The thing Is I find troublesome is maybe with PAG's strategy of making money they rather sell us a complete tranny versus rebuilding. For gosh sakes are the tranny's all welded on together in one piece. I concur-one worn synchro=new tranny-doesn't make ne sense. Regards. Mike P.S.-doesn neone have pics of how 996 synchros look like?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just did a cup car tranny. It was a lot like a g50 with a bunch of extra steel *****. I think the steel ***** is what makes it so heavy. These syncros are g50 syncros and the gears are g50 gears. I talked to Paul Gaurd at gt gaurd and he told me the 996 NA tranny was totaly different and even the brgs were impossible to get. As far as a big enough press, we never had to have any big press for them so I don't understand that kind of thinking. We do have a big press that we do use on tranny's but are you talking 8 ft tall???

POST 7Original post

It's really stupid IMO that Porsche in their infinite wisdom has made these trannys non-servicable. Sounds like some brainiac from marketing thought this one up. JimB where in Texas are you having the trans rebuilt? just for future reference, you can pm if you like. TIA

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'd like that contact also. I've always tried to pride my work on not being a parts replacer. If nothing else if the job on your tranny turns out ok maybe we could all send them some more work. Its bad enough that all the other work gets subbed out to other countries, but now this to. Makes me sad.

POST 9Original post

I'll wait until mine returns today or tomorrow. If it's good, I'll pass the info along.

POST 10Original post

While the transmission is being serviced, is it possible to get a lightweight flywheel installed, and a competition clutch?
