Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

13 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My Brother has a 2003 M5 and It a beast no doubt.. I would have to agree, but also in the same vain, the AMG V8 54399cc in the CLK55 is a beast also, one drive you will understand why - agreed it is not as fast, but it also has no problem keeping up....

POST 2Original post

i was SMOKED by an '04 e55 a couple of weeks ago...out-of-the-box, it's very quick. it was almost as thrilling as getting blown away by a gt2 ("A GT2") on the sd fwy. i've tracked w/ late model m5s. a standard 996 will have a though time trying to to overtake one. you'd be surprised by how fast an expert can hustle a 4,000 + lb car when he wants to get away from a p-car

POST 3Original post

In Best Motoring video #2 they had an M3 vs. M5, Evo, 99' 911, STI, & NSX, RX7 & Skyline on a tight track (Tskuba) in wet conditions, and the M5 finished dead last. I would say your statement is the exact opposite of the truth, at least on any semi-curvy track, the 911 would eat the M5 up. On a track with long straights it might be a different story.

POST 4Original post

I owned both, an M5 ( previous model ) and a 996C4. I have to agree with Fanman. The M5 has been my 2nd preffered car ...but. No way ( with the same driver ) to keep the pace of a 996 on a circuit or spanish curvy mountain. On a highway or open (wide ) roads it's another story ... if the M5 hasn't got the speed limiter ( 250 km/h). That said, I have overtaken lots of Porsches in curvy roads when I had my M5 !!!

POST 5Original post

I thought the M5 was too heavy a for an autocross course then I saw two at a recent autocross, the way the M5s were being thrown around course I must admit it was pretty impressive.

POST 6Original post

Well what are the times of the M5 and the latest 996 on Nuerburgring? The Ring Taxi does it around 8:20???

POST 7Original post

i didn't have to watch a video, i've lived it! the guy's skill behind the m5 is well know to me--we traded top spots at bmwcca events for yrs. I've owned the two previous gen. m5s and i know what they're capable of. on paper a 3.4l 996 and e39 m5 are close @ roughly 10lbs per hp. the advantage a stock 996 has in 'stick' or 'grip' won't be obvious over a half a lap or even a full one. I was stuck behind my friend not because i was slower, but because he was just fast enough on long straights to hold me up.

POST 8Original post

i've always wanted to take an M5 out for a good drive, but have never had the opportunity. anybody wanna trade their M5 for my C4 for a week?

POST 9Original post

I have driven an 00 M5 for four years and believe me, it is a lot of fun to toss around. It understeers a little on turn in, but hangs the *** out on acceleration thru the rest of the corner; unlike my 996, which has lots of grip at turn in, but then tends to understeer a little under acceleration out. Brake-wise, it is mind boggling at how quickly the heavy M5 stops. I also like the torque of the M5; if I am stuck behind someone doing 50 mph, I can pass them comfortably in any gear 2 thru 6. POST 10Original post

I love my M5 and have to admit it is a shade faster than my 02C4S, even with the mods. That is one small factor in moving up to the EVO SC. I hope to pick the p-car up tomorrow, and so far Motorsport Werks says it is running strong. There are some definite issues with the install on a C4S and additional enginering needs to be done. Did you know the drive shaft must be removed to dyno a Porsche AWD car? More to come. Will

POST 11Original post

Just how it feels, but my M5 brakes feel like I stop quicker than my C4S. Not by a huge amount of course, but something I can feel, so call it 10%.

POST 12Original post

I found that you have to go to floating rotors and open up the cooling ducts or brakes will become a problem on the M5. On a track like Watkins Glen I could keep up with the 996 because I could catch them on the straights. The suspension and the weight get the 996 around the corners better. The torque pulls the M5 better. When any suspension work is done to the M5, it really shows up in the corner performance. On a track like Lime Rock, the P-car will have a distinct advantage! All in all....having both is the best compromise!
