The 3-1/2" Kappas can be fitted into the front/rear speaker boxes with no modification to the speaker box.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The door speakers are a little harder, since the Bose speaker is mounted with a 3 point flange, but still not too hard (at least, once I got up enough courage to pull the door panel).
Here's what bose sent me today:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Bose Music System in your 2002 Porsche 996 Cabriolet. In answer to your question, the factory installed Bose Music System in your vehicle has the following system content:
4.5" low to mid range speakers in a 5.5 liter tuned ported enclosure in each door
3.5" mid-range speakers and 2" tweeter in each rear side panel
2 - 5.25" woofers in a 14 liter tuned, ported bass enclosure mounted behind the rear seats
3.5" mid-range speakers and 2" tweeters mounted in the dash
Digital amplifier module with six channels of customized equalization, and AudioPilot R noise compensation technology located near the firewall
AudioPilot R microphone integrated into the instrument panel left o fthe steering wheel
Total System Wattage ~ 250W
Bose Corporation does not recommend adding any aftermarket components to the factory installed system they are not compatible and typically will degrade the sound quality of the system.Thank you for choosing Bose Corporation.

I looked back there and didn't see anything.
Not sure about the cab, but in the coupe the Bose bass enclosure is on the back deck, behind the seats. If you have the seat backs up, it would be easy to miss, as the top of the enclosire is carpetted and the ports are on the forward edge where they are obscured by the seat backs.
I measured the speakers in the door as 4", not 4-1/2". I don't remember the front/back tweeters being 2" (they seemed smaller) but I don't have them or the sheet with my measurements in front of me.
The ads for the Bose system say taht it has a 100 watt switching amp and five 25 watt linear amps, which would be a total of 225 watts. 6 linear amps for a total of 250 watts would make more sense. A lot of the ads also say 11 speakers, and it sounds like there are really 12.
Unlike the Carrera coupe, where the Bose subwoofers are behind the rear seats, the cab has a single subwoofer in the footwell between the drivers and passengers side, since the cab top takes up the space where the subs are in the coupe.
poursha: where specifically is the sub on the cab? i did notice there is a lot of bass in the passenger foot well area. can you see the sub or is the bass just ported into the car? the bass seems stronger in the passenger footwell than the driver's side.
acouvril: what did you change out on your setup? i can't remember but i thought you changed some of the components.
Interesting that the cab has a single sub. I wonder if that's why there seems to be a discrepency in the info out there re 11 v. 12 speakers and 5 v. 6 linear amps.
I swapped the stock Bose front, back and door speakers for other speakers. Nothing fancy, but it sounds a lot better to me. I haven't touched the bass enclosure yet.
you didn't run into any problems with impedance? i'd love to know more about this stock bose amp. what ohm speakers did you use as replacements and what size speakers did you use? did you go with a three way component setup in the front or did you use raw drivers?
I used 4 ohm Infinity Kappas. 3-1/2" front and rear, 4" door. My intent was to do as little to the stock setup as possible but get something that sounded better. The 3-1/2" Kappas can be fitted into the front/rear speaker boxes with no modification to the speaker box. It's not quite a straight drop in, but it's not too hard. The door speakers are a little harder, since the Bose speaker is mounted with a 3 point flange, but still not too hard (at least, once I got up enough courage to pull the door panel). It would probably be better to go with a real mid in the door, but I couldn't find anything that would fit w/o more modifications than I wanted to make. While the Kappas aren't audiophile speakers, they sound a lot better than the Bose speakers (IMHO).
The 4 ohm speakers are running just fine. I think that it's more of a problem to go to a lower impedence, because that would effectively increase the power and potentially overload the amp. You could probably go with any good quality 4 ohm speaker that has normal to high efficiency.
deputdog95,
the subwoofer/bass driver is indeed on the side of the transmission tunnel on the passenger side. this is why when you order carpets there is a difference between Bose and non Bose.
the letter you received describes the system in a coupe, not a cab; hence the discrepancy between power and speaker count.
the 02 Porsche/Bose system is an analog based system(i.e. copper wires between headunit and amplifier for all audio content at line level); MY03 and later are MOST fiber optic based systems.
please PM if you have additional quesitons on the amplifier.
I had one as a loaner a few years ago, and my recollection is that the passenger side footwell has a hump that sticks out from the center, so I assume that is where the sub is. I remember the floor mat didn't sit right, since they didn't have the ones for the cab with Bose option available yet.
