Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I am going to check with current owner on the rms issue before the sale, but would like to get a general feel from the board on what I am to expect if:
Leading evidence: 'Check with current owner' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check with current owner' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The seal itself (Actually 2 seals, they normally replace the lower seal too) are only a few dollars.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm currently looking at purchasing a '99 C2 with 30k miles and no warranty. I am going to check with current owner on the rms issue before the sale, but would like to get a general feel from the board on what I am to expect if:
1. there is a leak and it has not been fixed/the dealer could not fix the leak (how much $$ am I looking at?)
2. the car has not leaked.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
If it has a leak and its out of warranty and you can't get PNA to offer some good-will towards cost, it will cost you about 8 hours labour. The seal itself (Actually 2 seals, they normally replace the lower seal too) are only a few dollars. That's 8 hours of Porsche Dealership labour....i.e., expensive.
But......since the gearbox is dropped and clutch mechanism removed in order to get to the RMS, I would "without any hesitation"
replace the clutch at the same time. Especilaly with 30k on the clock.
This will cost you about another $600....but no labour costs.
So you would be well safe with a $2000 budget.
If the car has not leaked and it is out of wrranty, then Murphy will
almost definitely pay you a visit. Be warned.
Thanks Scouser for your help.
Has anyone on this board (located in the US) purchased third party Extended Warranty for their 996(s)? I saw a couple warranty quotes online, roughly $2k for 4 years/85k miles.. I thinking if its safer to purchase this warranty in the event of any oil leak..
again, any inputs would be greatly appreciated. lets hope my dream will come true.
Another thing is if A PPI is done with a dealer ask them to open up the area where the RMS is and check if crank within spec so you won't need to worry about engine replacement. I don't know how much they will charge for that but gives a piece of mind. Mine leaked at 9k miles and hasn't leaked since(x my fingers/toes : )!!!). Car has 40k miles and I do DE's 11-12 times a year. Regards. Mike
I think all out of warranty cars should have a little glass covered compartment with around $2k in it. With a sign on the glass that says break in case of emergancy.
