Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I would like real users to reply and let me know if you are getting real performance gains out of a chip. Most companies are claming 20hp for the N/A 3.4 and I'm a little skeptical. TIA!

POST 2Original post

claming a chip will give u 20hp gain on a NA 3.4 porsche engine is stupid IMO!

POST 3Original post

btw, X51 will give u only give u 25 extra hp, but i did noticed a huge difference!

POST 4Original post

i haven't done it because of cost reasons, but i spent almost 2 years researching it before deciding to do other mods first. what i found out is that the chip alone won't do much, definitely not 20 HP. if you upgrade your intake (airtek or fabspeed) and exhaust (to fabspeed, GHL, or similar) and then have the chip programmed with these mods taken into account, you can get about 20-25HP gain out of the 3.4L engine. most of this will be above 4K RPM. below 4K RPM you won't get much gain. so total cost you're looking at is about 1000 for the mufflers, 300-400 for the intake, and 1000 for a powerchip (or similar). this assumes you install the parts yourself. the other chips (like the GIAC) are more expensive and i didn't find anybody that could conclusively tell me they were better. some people reported they were slightly better, others reported similar results to the powerchip. for the cost of the more expensive chips, the possible HP gain wasn't justified IMHO. overall i decided that a better suspension and a couple of appearance upgrades were more worth the money. that's my .02...

POST 5Original post

I emailed powerchip about my car and they sent me a pdf file with the estimated hp gains. I tried to access it again but the link doesn't work anymore. But what I can remember, for my car a 3.4, all I could expect was something like 6-8 hp gain with 91 octane. They said that there is more with 93 oct. but I can't get that in Ca. IMO not worth it for the money. If you want to see the chart, just email them with your car info and they will probably send you the same chart that I received.

AWE (+23hp) http://www.awe-tuning.com/pages/shar...s&IL=GIACChips EVOMS (18+ hp) http://www.evoms.com/p%20996%20computer.htm No mention of any other mods. I have the exhaust already and will more than likely get the intake from Fabspeed in the near future. After that I will have the car dyno'd and will probably look into getting a chip at that point. Once that is installed I will go back for another dyno session and see what I get. If it's not the advertised HP's I will want my money back... I'll get that agreement up front, prior to buying the chip! So I was really hoping to hear feedback from someone who has actually done this. Tuners can claim all they want. I want proof from someone else. BTW... we have 93 octane here.

POST 7Original post

Nick, EvoMS has an intake/GIAC package thats very interesting. IIRC, they actually did some independent dyno plots that validated the gains, although I'm still a bit skeptical. Still, Todd @ EVO at one point offered both a money back guarantee and a free trial on the kit. They also had it on sale last year for xmas. Nobody took him up on it from what I remember, but I thought about it. In any case, if I did an intake I would definitely go with the Evo cold air system, as I could always get the GIAC chip later on and have a system thats tuned for it. Also, I'd expect the Evo air intake, GIAC chip, and GHL exhaust would net a nice improvement. I'm thinking of doing something like that once we take care of a few household expenses. But if there was a group buy or something I would probably jump in. -Dave

POST 8Original post

IMO-if you plan to do other mods ie exhaust/intake etc a basic chip upgrade will not configure to the other mods. Only thing is reflash of ecu or piggyback or stand-alone engine management system to reap ne benefits. You may get 20hp but it's a combo of mods not just a chip and most of hp if not all is at higher rpms. Regards. Mike

POST 9Original post

I have the Fabspeed intake, headers, and exhaust. Before the chip I noticed better sound, but very little change in acceleration, after the chip it was noticeably faster. I have a 01' C2. I think the ecu upgrade helped me utilize the add ons better.
