I use the RA-1 as a rain tire on the race car and am very familiar with it but have no experience with the Michelins.

I race a Spec E30 BMW with NASA so I only rarely drive my 996 on the track--open lap days etc. It is never raced. Since I only drive the 996 8K miles a year or so, I want the best street/track tire possible. I am looking at the RA-1 and Pilot Sport Cup. I use the RA-1 as a rain tire on the race car and am very familiar with it but have no experience with the Michelins. My tire shop said that they sold a ton of Michelins when they first came out but that for many reasons people did not like them and sales have become very slow. Has anyone used both?

MPSC will wear out fast on street. RA 1 is a good compromise. it's good for street and performs admirably on track as well.

Hello fellow e30 racer... The wear characteristic of the RA-1 is what makes it a feasible street tire for you. It is also much the reason why it has a bit less grip than the MPSC. However, consensus (for track use) seems to be that the MPSC has great wear characteristics and grip...the lack of compromise seems to justify the price. That is not to say, however, that the MPSC will last quite as long as the RA-1 on the street...

The Cups are more sensitive to pressure and warminup; they are greasy in the first few laps. RA1's a my choice.
