Suggestion

I Dont think that you can adjust the position of the boxes, you can adjust to some degree the outlet pipes, you may find that if someone has taken off the boxes or bumper before that the heat shield has been bent up a bit, it seemed easy to bend out of place.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Any tips/advice on how to remove the rear bumper on a 98 996 ??? cheers, SP

POST 2Original post

Hi SP, yes its very easy suprisingly, just held on with 6 or 8 self tappers underneath, 2 just inside the rear wheel arches and the rest around the skirt, also another 4 inside the engine lid lip holding the metal strip along the shut line. p.s. dont forget to re attatch the rear number plate light socket !! Cheers Paul

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cheers Paul. I'll give it a go.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hang on a minute, I aint done it yet !!! i'll let you know how it goes. once the bumper is off can you take off the heatsheild too or does it come off with the bumper in one go ??? cheers, SP

POST 6Original post

Heat sheilding stays in situ ........... What you doing anyway ???

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm putting on new exhaust tips and I just want to adjust the position of the exhaust boxes as I think they are rubbing slightly on the heatsheild.

POST 8Original post

I Dont think that you can adjust the position of the boxes, you can adjust to some degree the outlet pipes, you may find that if someone has taken off the boxes or bumper before that the heat shield has been bent up a bit, it seemed easy to bend out of place. Ive asked the question on this forum but maybe you can help me, have you seen a cut away view of the factory sports system anywhere ? Regards

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yeh, it could have been me that bent the heatsheild as I fitted the factory sports exhaust myself last year. do you mean cut away as a cut section through one of the boxes or a cut section through the car showing the boxes in place ??

POST 10Original post

Cut away of the boxes......... showing internals if poss but I doubt that Porsche are silly enough to show us that !! Im converting my standard boxes, have cut in the bypass pipe but makes no or very little difference amazingly, just moded the internals and waiting to put on and test the weekend !! Just be nice to see how they do it ....

POST 11Original post

There's not a lot of play. The boxes are held up with 3 screws. Difficult to get at but possible. I think taking the rear skirt off is not the way to go. I have had my fabspeed boxes off a few times (I have a set of bypass pipes I play with every now and then ). When I put them back on I ensure that all the bolts are loose. So that's the 3 bolts on the box and the 2 bolts that attach the box's outlet pipe to the cat. Then I wiggle the box into place until the heatshield is free from the skirt and also ensuring the cat and pipe are aligned. I then tighten one cat pipe bolt and one box bolt. then when I am happy I tighten up the bolts. Fitting the tips can be the biggest nightmare. It's fiddly and a PITA but it works. But taking the skirt off won't help you.

As you three chaps seem to be settling in for a nice chat around the AGA, would you fancy a spot of tea perhaps? Maybe some scones and clotted cream as well? Sorry, couldn't resist after seeing your locations and that you were the only ones in this thread Jeff

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

we might do, enjoy your burger & fries for one.

POST 14Original post

Jeff, Strange and amazing as it may seem, but we Brits found out about wires a short time after you guys in the US. As a result we too are connected to the Internet. We can even do it via wireless now. I hear they have it in France now too. Finally they can thro that Morse Code system out. Hey my wife just yelled to me that its a Global thing nowadays! Here was I thinking it was just A US and British phenomenon. Gee I must be dumb. Have a nice day.
