Suggestion
in the US it's illegal for a dealer to void your warranty based on using a non-OEM replacement part for any wearable component.

it violates anti-trust laws for them to require you to use only dealer or OEM parts on the car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I called dealer today to ask for pricing on PSE, and how much for install if i bring in Fabspeed or GHL, when the service advisor said that any non porsche exhaust could void warranty if anything happens. Like if you get a check engine light and you have a non porsche exhaust, dealer could blame the exhaust to be the cause.
Back to PSE, (this is the one i am choosing)
1) Would i get interior noise?
2) would i gain any power?
3) overall, is the sound annoyingly loud?
Thanks folks.
Huh...up here the dealer happily installed the Fabspeed exhaust and told me they would cover everything under warranty...they sold me and installed a RUF short shifter as well...full warranty coverage etc...
good that u bring this up. first to answer ur question, 1. yes, u will gain positive noise inside the car & u'll love it. 2. it will not gain any extra power according to Porsche, but rumor says it gain 5hp but Porsche doesn't bother to list. 3. as i say, u'll love the sound. that's also why to go with OEM exhaust. Porsche will never make anything annoying for the car.
I think it depends on the individual dealer... Some will install superchargers, others will deny warranty claims if you use the wrong kind of wax on your car...
Also, don't bother having the bypass switch put in. It's a waste of time as you will probably want the exhaust on all the time. In addition, it will save you install dollars and and the possibility of getting squeaks and rattles as they have to take a lot of the inside of the car apart to put in the lines and the switch. The bypass switch is also programmed to cut off the exhaust automatically at low RPM's (European noise restrictions) and you would probably end up having this feature disabled.
Lastly, this is a fairly straight forward install. I took mine over to the local Midas Muffler shop and they swapped out the mufflers in about 1 1/2 hours for $75 - significantly less than the dealer is going to charge you.
Talked to my dealer this week about exhaust. The mechanics said they have heard, but never seen, that some of the aftermarket exhaust can burn out the cats in a prolonged track event because the cats can get too hot. They said that that also applies to PSE with the baffles permanantly bypassed. However, they were not against any system. They said they had only heard bypass pipes, "sounds like a dump truck," and PSE. They like the sound of PSE and said it was a worthwhile mod. I could choose whether to wire it up or not. They felt unless the car was being tracked on an extensive basis, the cats should be fine with the PSE left open and they saw no warranty issues. They had one car that the cat started rattling after installing a RUF exhaust. Porsche replaced it under warranty. I have not seen anyone on this forum report a cat problem. I am leaning toward the PSE. On advice of this forum I will probably not wire it up. I would think you could always do that later if you felt it necessary.
in the US it's illegal for a dealer to void your warranty based on using a non-OEM replacement part for any wearable component. this includes mufflers and any pipes that go along with them, spark plugs, brake pads & rotors, battery, etc. it violates anti-trust laws for them to require you to use only dealer or OEM parts on the car.
but in a warranty dispute with a dealership, your going to loose either way, they deny it, you have to get a lawyer to make them pay, and 99% of the courts will not have the defending party pay your legal bills, so your out of money either way
The mechanics comments regarding PSE don't make sense to me. In a full factory setup, the only time the exhaust switches to quiet mode (bypassing the baffles) is between 30 and 40 mph, to comply with strict noise laws in some countries. If you tracked your car with the factory PSE install, the mufflers would be in loud mode the lion's share of the time...unless someone is a really slow driver...
Your mechanic gave you a bunch of BS. If a muffler flows better the heat will disipate quicker and not burn out the cats. Think if the exhaust stay longer it will transfer heat to the cats thus stock exhaust can be more harmful than the PSE or aftermarket.
As far as warranty it depends on the dealer. That dealer just wants you to buy the PSE from him. he just wants any excuse not to waranty the car. See the dealer gets paid half the amount for labor under waranty as if you paid out of your pocket. Muffler will never alter emission, and engines.
Exhaust is in the ear of the beholder I hear good things about Fabspeed, PSE, Ruf, GHL. Buy what you want. GHL deal for rennlist members is hard to beat and they offer 14 day return if not satisfied. As far as installation its easy search this forum for instructions, or look at Loren' site.
Agree with Poursha. There is something lacking in the knowledge department for your dealer. But then again, what else is new?
Interior noise increase with the PSE is negligible at cruising. Sounds like stock. Definitely noisier when accelerating, but that's why you buy it, right?
With regards to warrantees, it's very dealer dependent. My dealer installs B&B mufflers to customers that don't want to ante up the cost of PSE. They do tech for DE. They will discuss what track R compound tires you may prefer. They will align your car for track use if you ask. All the above will void the warrantee for some other dealers, not for all.
I agree jetskied and Palting, not that I have a degree in thermodynamics, however, I don't know why a free flowing exhaust would put the cat at greater risk for heat damage anymore than a stock muffler. Unfortunately, the number of dealers around here are limited. That's why I like this forum to get feedback.
What about for turbo applications? Dosen't bigger (or even just straight) downpipes resolve into slightly more boost, thus causing the turbo to spin more creating increased wear? I know it's probably not enough to cause a problem, but i wouldn't doubt theres more technicalities to it.
