Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

turned out to be a bad intermediate shaft bearing (bearing practicaly disintegrated).
Leading evidence: 'intermediate shaft bearing (bearing practicaly disintegrated)' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'intermediate shaft bearing (bearing practicaly disintegrated)' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check also since the car is undergoing major' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It was a bad lifter, and they replaced the right bank of lifters.

Suspected cause
from a mechanical standpoint I'd say it's either lifters (enough said already) or some sort of bearings , maybe pumps or something , I've heard that sound before from a different make of vehicle, and it was the a/c compressor bearings.

Suggestion
I know changes were made over the years, but can you get this sound (less the horrible clattering noise your poor car is making) with an exhaust on '99s?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As I was driving I heard two knocks from the back. It sounded like I ran over a plastic bottle and it got thrown around in the wheel arch. But when I got out of the car while it was on I heard this metalic tapping sound...It's never made this noise before and the car still drives fine. Temperature is normal and oil pressure is normal.
I recorded a sound clip, the sound I'm talking about is very clear.
Engine Sound
These sound like engine replacement problems...i'm feeling very depressed. 5000 miles on the car not even a year since I got it. Take better care of the car then myself.
I have exactly the same sound on the right side of my car.. But the only difference is that it completely goes away as soon as the revs get higher than idle, and ONLY when hot..
I'll have it checked also since the car is undergoing major repair...

My 99 C2 with 18000miles made this exact same noise when I started it after not driving it for a week.
Sound was as loud as yours when i first started it and stayed that loud for about 5 minutes. After a 10 minute drive it almost disappeared (but could still be heard). Next morning, everything went back to normal. It hasn't come back since (4 months on).
Hey,
While this is slightly off-topic, do you have the stock exhaust on your car? I ask because it sounds considerably more "purposeful" than the stock exhaust on our '99. I know changes were made over the years, but can you get this sound (less the horrible clattering noise your poor car is making) with an exhaust on '99s? Does it sound loud just at idle, or at all rpm's?
Thanks for info... and sorry I can't offer any suggestions on your problem. But it does sound like EXTREMELY loud lifters or something.
Jeff
OK, let's play the guessing game. I counted about 20 clicks in 3 seconds, that would make it about half idle speed, indicating intermediate shaft or camshafts. Together with the two knocks, my wild guess would be that one of the chain tensioners has gone and it's a chain sound.
Let us know once you've got it back from the shop ...
Cheers,
Uwe
Jeff: I have a Sports Exhaust but it was switched off when I made the recording so it doesn't sound like a stock or sports exhaust. The 02/03 Sports Exhaust will fit a 99.
Had the car transported to the dealership today and will get an assesment tomorrow.
my boxster devolped the same clicking sound. turned out to be a bad intermediate shaft bearing (bearing practicaly disintegrated). because of possible engine contamination (metal bits and shavings from the bearing) porsche decided to replace the engine.
Keyvan, mine made a similar noise at tick-over and it was caused by a set of loose baffles in one of the rear exhaust boxes. The noise disappeared above 1500. It also caused the engine to stumble a bit if the aircon was off (lower t/o speed at about 600).

Ouch that don't sound good.
Defo sounds like a valve lifter (one only).
But the car's under warranty. Right?
Best of luck with it anyway mate. Keep us posted.
Aparrantly they are too busy to look at my car so they gave me a loaner...
I will never complain that my car is slow again...It's a S class 320! they don't have them in the states...DESIEL...Sounds like a tractor.
I got the car back and the service rep told me there was a blockage in the oil system. He wasn't more specific but the car runs fine now and there is a lot more power. But what really annoys me is they fixed the car by driving it around until it just unblocked?!!! Well doesn't really make sense to me but it the car is fine now.
The hydraulic valve lifters have small channels through which the oil flows. Don't know the exact mechanism on the P-car, but usually there is an oil chamber within the lifter with a small exit hole, making the lifter act like a small shock absorber. No oil, the valve stem bottoms out the valve lifter and there is a larger gap between the two, hence the tapping sound you hear. I would suppose Vario-cam is also dependent on this small oil chamber to do it's vario-thing.
I don't think there would be any long term effects from the short term blockage. Hopefully.

Ooopd sorry,
Ihave but one question if something was blocking the oil and they just drove it till it came out won't it likely be recirculated back into it sometime ??
And that something could be something off of something else ,shards of metal, etc.
I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure it only took a few dozen shifts at redline to clear it out.
Perhaps it would be a good idea to make sure the incident was well documented by the dealer and definitely hang on to the sound clip.
