FWIW, it was the far right hole when standing at the rear looking at the motor.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No pics..sorry. Found a very small spot of oil on the garage floor. When I looked, the oil pan was all oily. Anyway, took it to the dealer. Long story short and after a week they found that the oil was leaking THROUGH one hole where the pan is bolted to the motor. Dealer assumed that bolt was not torqued enouf, but that wasn't the problem. It was a "defective" oil pan...so I now have a cruddy looking engine with a bright shiny bottom. FWIW, it was the far right hole when standing at the rear looking at the motor. First time I heard that one. I had my camera with me when I picked up the car to take pics of the defective pan, but they had "whisked" it away to Porsche that morning. Anyway, I bet that's the first time that's happened to a 996.... Should we add it to the list, or do you think it's a unique situation? 02 Cab w/10K. Dealer was superior..all covered by warranty, of course, but I got a smoker Taurus for a loaner. Had to wear the same clothes for a week and undress in the garage!

POST 2Original post

Don, If it was a damaged (at factory) pan , I would think it to be an isolated instance. If it were defective , I think yours may be the first of more to come. Hopefully it was damaged.

POST 3Original post

I have a small spot under the right rear as well. It's an '02 Carerra 2. I haven't gotten underneath. I wipe the spot up every morning. Stay tuned. It may be the same? Only 2k miles.

POST 4Original post

Cam cover and oil pressure sending unit are also common causes for leaks in that area.

POST 5Original post

I had that leak and it was the oil pressure sending unit. No leak since - 12 months ago

POST 6Original post

Ditto..Oil Pressure Sending Unit...fixed and dry ever since (thankfully).
