Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone have DYI instructions about pulling apart these releases? Neither my engine lid or trunk will open from the latches inside...it started as a trunk latch problem, but now neither will open... Thanks, BL

POST 2Original post

Use the manual emergency release cables. The rear one is hidden under the left tailight assembly. I'm not sure about the front one, but I seem to remember it's similarly hidden under the headlight somewhere. (Not sure which side, I'd start by looking on the left) =CarlosR=

POST 3Original post

how exactly are you supposed to get to it if it's hidden beneath the headlight or tail light? Mitch had that problem the other day and we thought it was a catch 22 because you have to open the engine lid to take out the tail light. are you supposed to use a coat hanger or something?

POST 4Original post

Parkman, I was there, remember? I was the guy that spent most of the time looking for (and eventually finding) the release cable. (but then we didn't have anything to reach in and get it with, and I didn't want to take a chance on scratching Mitch's fine-looking vehicle) Here's the official Porsche description, which isn't a lot of help: "Front Lid - The emergency release cable to unlock the lid runs from the lower part of the lock behind the fender inner liner on the right-hand side of the vehicle. Rear Lid - The emergency release cable to unlock the lid runs from the lower part of the lock to the left-hand side of the vehicle." That's all the info I have from Porsche. That's from a book called "Service Information, Technical Introduction, 911 Carrera" for Model Year 1999. You can get this from your dealer for something like $30, and it's well worth having. The part number is PNA 499 921. However, note that I got mine several years ago, so I don't know if it's still produced for newer models, or if the price is still roughly the same. If it's available, get it, as it has some good technical stuff to know. It's probably 100+ large pages in length, with lots of pictures and diagrams. Back to the question at hand. Ignore my earlier post about the location of the front release, as I obviously had the side wrong. To get at the rear release cable, a coat hanger or something like that would work. You just reach in under the rubber seal under the tailight and you can get at the cable. You'll need a light to see what you're doing. The front one sounds a bit more cryptic, but some exploring should turn it up. Good luck! =Carlos=

POST 5Original post

http://forum.boxa.net/index.php?showtopic=3761 Front trunk access pre electric release. But I think the link will not work unless I'm on the site.

POST 6Original post

I had the battery go dead on me once and since the hood lock is electrical i couldn't access the battery. Had to get the car towed to the dealer and it took a week for them to figure out how to get to the damn battery. After I got it back I removed the front right headlight and moved the emergency release cable so that I could access it from the front right signal light if the car ever goes dead. Bobby

POST 7Original post

The electric releases started in 2001. Prior to that time they were mechanical via Bowden cables. If your alarm was on and the battery died on a car with mechanical release then you cannot lift up on the levers unless you do a trick. The first thing I did almost 5 years ago on my old Boxster was to extend the emergency release cable to the side marker.
