I just returned from a European vacation and is on a non-weight bearing restriction on my foot waiting on operation, don't know how long i will be out, I will recommend you don't do the repair kit from Amazon or the OEM part (cost), I would send it to Arizona repair, they use all metal pulleys and have lifetime warranty.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello all, my 2001 had a god awful rattle coming from the passenger side rear window area. I have pulled the cover and touched or tightened everything I can with no luck. I feel that it may be inside the regulator itself but the window still operates fine. I hate to pull or replace this expensive part for no other reason. Has anybody else had the same issue? On-line instructions are spotty at best for the rear window.
If you google 996 cab rear window regulator rebuild kit you will find several different kit for less than $100. Takes some time but new regulators are over $800 and that is before installation.
I have rebuilt the rear cab regulator on 04 and 02, found kits on Amazon for 60.00. first time took my time, second one was half day job including installing cable kit on regulator, there is a U tube on the regulator rebuild, view it first on how to remove the pulleys or you will be SOL, another key tool is to have a wood wedge about 6 inches long going from 1/4 in thick to 2 inch to separate cab frame from body to remove the regulator.

Thanks for the advise. I was reading about a "wedge" but could not quite understand what it was needed for. I have watched the YouTube video. They guy does it in less than 6 minutes.

I mean just take stuff apart til you can get to them and then swap em. Once you gain access behind the panel you loosen the clamp that holds window and unplug old unit then put new one in. I gutted the entire interior so I cant say for sure what you HAVE to pull out to gain access. They were one of the last items I pulled out. If you need help while doing it, you can text me pics and I can try to help though.
Thanks Mike for the offer. I've been digging deep on this site and YouTube. I am still hesitant for a coupe of reasons. "Wedging" a block between "something and something else" to loosen it up and the thoughts of messing around the top mechanism and hydraulics gives me pause. I once tried to repair the top on a BMW Z4 and it was not the same afterwards. It barely worked, enough to sell it. It's not fun to take your friends for a ride in your new car and it rattles worse than BB's in a coffee can. The window works fine, maybe some dynamat is in my future. Take care!
Hi all,
I have reveiwed the video to fix my 996 rear window regulator, has anyone done this and did they run into trouble? I found that taking the reg out of my cabriolet much easier than people made it sound but the wooden block to expand the area was the perfect tool for the job.
I can believe it, first time can be PIA, I've done it 5 times now and last one took 3 hours and included rebuilding the regulator with cable kit from Amazon, very doable and working in that area if you drop a nut or tool, it is a graveyard. should list where your located, if close enough wouldn't have problem helping you out.
I think my dealer wanted $2k or just under. I did it myself for less than $300, which included paying for shipping and having the folks in Arizona to rebuild it (

See if you can find an auto body shop to replace the window regulator. Those shops are familiar with taking the car apart to replace bodywork items as yuo'd expect, unlike a regular mechanic who focuses on the engine and other mechanical parts.
when removing the large interior piece that covers everything....it has to lift straight up then toward the centerline of the car. there is a hook-like attachment.
I dropped a big nut down in there and found it after several hours with a long borescope and some tiny neodymium magnets taped to it. It was about three feet away!
The advice above saved my bacon. Props to everyone, (and since I'm not a DIY'er) especially Mike Murphy and theprf for their spot-on recommendations. powerwindowrepair.com performed the entire job on my 996.2 for a very affordable price - couldn't be happier
Hi folks.
I need both rear regulators removed and reinstalled on my 2000 996 cabriolet. I plan on sending them in for repair. Does anybody know of a shop that can do that for me in Long Beach, CA?
Thanks very much!
Thanks all for the advice on this thread I just had my regulator fail today so I will have to tackle this over the next few days.
Long shot John - but I am located near you any chance the offer still stands to help out a first timer with the replacement?
If you are a DIY and want to try the on-line repair kit, have at it. It is tedious, time consuming, and then it doesnt work, and you end up taking it back out and spend days on end. I tried that once and gave up. The factory solution is $1400 and it works well. Installing it is a 4 hour job IF you know what you are doing and have the right tools. It is a miserable job. This is another example of fine German engineering. If only they make that access hole double the size, or change fastener to something easier to deal with...

This a good U Tube on the removal and install, I would add instead of using a screwdriver to spread the frames and get the regulator out, make a wood wedge about six inches long going from a point to 3 inch to spread the frames, then drive the wedge just enough to spread the frames enough to get the regulator out.
Fixing my Rear Window Regulator on the 996 Porsche 911 Cabriolet DIY
Thanks for the advice - Locally indy quoted $800 for labour on replacement. I'll take your advice on the rebuilt part and get it sourced. If I DIY it, ill report back here (FYI the porsche part was quoted at nearly 2000$)
Well, I'm having a total nightmare with this. The new head for the bottom bolt rounded off. I must have been turning it a slight angle, slipped and there ya go. Managed to get the regulator out, repair it and get it most back in, but I can't line up the regulator with the bolt unless I can turn it more. Worst job ever. (this is on a 997 btw)
Biggest problem is that I can't just use an extractor tool and then replace it as it's simply impossible to get to.
If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful - I've tried tapping a larger Torx in but that doesn't grip either.
