Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Porsche friends have a 996 C4S wanting to do a transmission refresh typical issues with synchros in 2nd gear. Anybody gone this route rather than a complete rebuild? Any idea on costs? Thx

You can try replacing 2nd gear syncro and also maybe the shift sleeve. A big press is only needed for all the other gears, not needed for 1-2 syncro assembly replacement.. Maybe also get the 3 detent *****, & springs as they're prone too go flying across the shop. If grinding 2nd gear routinely, you may need 2nd gear and its shift sleeve.... A total tranny rebuild would be best, but it takes a tech familiar with trannys. For the mechanically inclined its not a problem, just be ready to learn the particulars of the Porsche tranny. But if everything in the tranny works fine and sounds good (no bearing noise), then just a 2nd gear syncro assembly might fix your problem well.... New Porsche Tranny parts are expensive, be ready. jmo

No joke! Over $1,000 for the cheapest 1-2 gear parts.

POST 6Original post

Damn, I have 155k with no issues. And I drive the snot out of mine. I just change the gear oil every time I pull the motor to do any clutch etc. work. Every ~40k. I do have a few gearboxes on my watch list to purchase and install when it is time to rebuild mine.

POST 7Original post

The harder Ive driven mine the better the 2nd got! No more grinding.
