Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New 996 owner, 1999. Just an observation on the ride. Driving on the highway, my ride seems a little rough. Not sure how else to describe it, but is this just how the 996 ride is? Any feedback would be great. My mechanic told me my left from tire has some cupping. Wounding this is the what I am feeling? txs M.

POST 2Original post

My car was set up for autox and DE by the po... I had the lowering Springs removed and an alignment done before I picked it up... It still has some sort of sport shocks and adjustable sways.... And the ride is stiff. I try like anything to avoid rough pavement!

POST 3Original post

Yes - the ride is firm and responsive. I guess my question is what car are you coming from? What is it "rough" in comparison to? Also, where are you? In New England, roads, including highways, are not smoothe like Florida roads.

POST 4Original post

Some details would help: Wheel size (17", 18", 19"?) Suspension setup (stock, coilovers, etc.) How old are the tires? What tire pressure are you running? Anything other details about your car... Cupping can happen when a tire is chronically under-inflated, and it could also be the result of an alignment issue caused by whacking a curb or smacking into a giant pothole. I don't expect that a cupped tire can be blamed for an overall rough ride... My '99, which has full aftermarket suspension, was too rough when I acquired the car. I expect a sports car to ride differently than an SUV or a people hauler, but the wife was unhappy with the bone-rattling ride, and honestly, who wants to pee blood for a week after a weekend of hard driving? Raising the car slightly and dialing out a little bit of spring made the ride much more comfortable without ruining the aggressive look. Give us more info about your car, and hopefully someone here will have some tips on how to achieve a more compliant ride.

POST 5Original post

Probably tires, possibly pavement. I have new Goodrich G-Force KDW, because they look cool and have a bead to prevent curb rash. They are loud and rough (bad) on most pavements. But on new asphalt they are smooth and proper. The Pirelli Pzero's from the factory were much quieter and smoother. I think Michelin Pilot Sport 2 (or something like that) is the preferred tire among 996 folks currently.

POST 6Original post

steering wheel vibrate? could be out of balance/ true wheels or worn suspension ie tie rods/ control arms. or worn out engine mounts/ tranny mounts. definitely check both. to me there's a noticeable difference in rough as in stiff but tight (good) and rough as in just plain old sloppy and out of tune.
