KC, I did not finger my sump over the weekend, but I _did_ adjust my tailpipe several times.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

20 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Cruising down the 8 today, doing 75ish, when suddenly I hear a VERY loud, metallic clanging-n-banging from the business end of my 996. I clutch in and the sound doesn't stop, so I chart a course for the shoulder, watching the mirrors for traffic and oil slicks. Neither are visible... I shut the car down, the sound stops, and I coast to a stop on a wide shoulder. It turns out that... * If you have a skid plate for your oil pan, and; * if a couple of the bolts securing it work free, and; * you exceed a specific speed - 75-80, I believe, then: the front edge of the skid plate will be pushed down by air flowing under the car until the front edge starts scraping along the asphalt, making a sound that, unfortunately for my peace of mind, could easily be described as "marbles in a coffee can." I'll round up a new set of bolts to lock that sucker down tonight. Otherwise, no harm, no foul. Well, no harm except I may not poo for the next 12 weeks. I've had the car up on ramps for most of the last week pulling off the mufflers, installing the Fisters, and fussing with the exhaust tips - nothing looked amiss with the skid plate. Something new to check every time I have the car up in the air...

POST 3Original post

Glad everything is ok. Maybe also stash a pair of Depends undergarments in your glovebox or something as well. Also Loctite blue is your friend.

POST 4Original post

After reading the first paragraph I was afraid to keep reading. Glad it turned out well.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I was afraid to look under the car. Yeah, I'll be loctiting the s**t out of those bolts.

POST 6Original post

Works the same way with an S430. Ask me how I know. By the way, you didn't happen to finger your sump over the weekend, did you? That might be a contributing factor . . .

POST 7Original post

Would that be known as a brown trouser moment lol?

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Neil, the trousers came away unscathed, but I believe my nether regions will be clenched tightly until further notice. KC, I did not finger my sump over the weekend, but I _did_ adjust my tailpipe several times.

POST 9Original post

You had me going there for a minute. I'm sure you were sh**ing bricks for a bit though. Glad it wasn't the marbles in a coffee can thingie.

Is that what they're calling it now?

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Heh - I wanted you all to get a little taste of what I experienced about 2 hours ago. What a fantastic ending to what seemed like a really crappy moment in time...

Glad to hear there was a happy ending to your story.....Let the happy ending jokes begin ..........5CHN3LL, I have one also and when the dealer installed it last year they alerted me that even though the plate has what looks like four mounting points there are only three mounting points on the motor to accept bolts. Is your plate the same?

Yes, I believe mine has an unused hole on the edge closest to the rear of the car.

Can I borrow your scanning electron microscope? I'd like to verify the extent of the damage to my skidplate.
