Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

With some warranty left I could have the noise repaired by the dealer.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey there.
Yesterday I test drove several 996s. Which one sounds best of the three?
From Porsche dealer:
2000 silver/black, 38000, 6spd, aero kit, sport design wheels, hi-fi, asking $49,000.
2001 black/black, 20000, 6spd, aero kit, sport classic wheels, sport seats, hi-fi, PSM, heated seats, asking 58k.
From fairly reputable used dealer:
2000 black/black, 13000miles, 6spd, aero kit, sport seats, asking 49000.
The 13k mile cars looks the best on paper but is it a "jump now" price? I'm a newbie to waterworld. Upon cursory inspection it there was paint work on the rear decklid but that could be from an install of the aero kit. My biggest concern is the mileage and a lifter noise. With some warranty left I could have the noise repaired by the dealer. What about the mileage? Carfax?
Any input/suggestions/comments are appreciated.
For the money these cars should have nothing wrong with them. I would negotiate the heck out of the dealer on these cars. There are many of these cars on the used market and very good deals can be had if you look hard enough. If you are considering them then a very thorough PPI should be conducted by someone who has considerable experience with the 996.
Personally after reading this board for the last 2 months I would want a 996 with quite a lot of warranty left, just in case the the RMS problem appears or problems with transmission.
I believe 2001 was when they went to the 3.6L 320HP engine. There were also some more subtle improvements. For that I'd start negotiating with the dealer for this car. You'd also have more warrantee left.
$58K is way too much money for it, though. Bargain hard, start real low. You won't get a "jump on it" price if you don't ask for it. Keep in mind there are a lot of cars in that MY delivered late 2000 about to come off 3 year leases.
Wow. I've read about the issues and it seems as though many 996 owners have had some serious problems.
This car has about 5months left on the factory warranty. Considering I drive my maybe 3k/year I probably won't look for an extended warranty.
Looks like you guys have numerous problems with your cars. I'd rather not buy a long warranty since I only drive my pcar maybe 3k a year (occassional trackday and weekenders).

The 3.6 change was in 2002. I would go with the lowest milage car possible, the '01 for $49K sounds pretty good to me. Get a PPI and go for it. Unless the other cars are available Porsche certified from the dealer. Which car had the noisy lifters? Check that out carefully as it could indicate nothing serious at best or oil starvation at worst.
BTW, I tried to respond to your PM but your box was full. See you at the track!
all those prices are a bit high, and the 58K price is definitely very high. i'd go for the car with the most warranty left and do some serious negotiation! you should be able to drop at least $3K off the other two prices, probably more.
nota_troll - It appears you do alot of bidding on Ebay for alot of different cars both 993 and 996. Seems you would be happy with either model?
Since you already own a 993 why would you make the change?
Thinking about a newer car. As far as styling the 996 doesn't do too much for me but the performance of the 996 and the manner in which it does it is impressive.
It surprised the he!! out of me.
