I was just about to order the B&M short shifter kit that was $299.00 but then I ran into the RUF/B&M shifter on Ebay for $200.

Local 996 owner Paul bought the new B&M unit that bolts to the transmission, instead of replacing the shift lever.

Sounds NICE....I've test driven one car with the original B&M and felt it was pretty NOTCHY....

I've read how Porsche uses new square section cables on the Carrera GT to improve feel and accuracy.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

What is the difference between the two, do they work with each other or are they totally different systems to install. Or maybe I can install both and have a really really Short Shift.
they all do the same thing, and no you can't simultaneously install more than 1.
get the B&M, its the best out there (not to mention the one that porsche apparently copied and repainted to make a factory option in 04)
Get the in car SSK (B&M in your first picture) many people say it is better (throws, feeling, etc.) do a search it has been covered before... Order It from Bob Foreign Affairs

you will save yourself close to 30%
I would not recommend using both kits, the throws will be too short IMO, potentially causing transmission damage (synchros). I think the question as to which short shifter type is "better" may have been answered by Porsche themselves as they now sell a B&M clone as the factory short shifter...but it costs 2-3X more as is typical of Porsche options. I understand that the B&M unit is actually made by a well known company in Germany and sold by B&M.
that makes very good sense. OF course the one Porsche uses would be of choice. It is also no wonder the Porsche dealer also install them. I got a quote of $300 for labor.
I'm sure I can do it my self, but I just wanted to see how much they gouge the everyday Porsche driver.
Anyhow, anyone have the link to the DIY?? Thanks in advance.

I have put several dozen of these and we do them about every other weekend.
Most of the time in San Jose or Morgan Hill -- just let me or Tool Pants know and we can help you install it.

There are plenty of local owners with the original B&M shift lever style short shift if you want to try it out.
Local 996 owner Paul bought the new B&M unit that bolts to the transmission, instead of replacing the shift lever. This new B&M unit is identical to the Ruf/TechArt units. Paul could not make it yesterday as he started a new job. He wants us to put it in next time we can get together. Jeff

From the posted review, you stated that the fwd/backwd throws were lessened, right? Thats exactly the way I want it as well....
I'm gonna sign up for one of those for my C2....hope they're still available on monday
I had a B&M in-car shifter on a '95 993 and a 97 C5 Corvette. On the Vette the throws were only 1" from neutral and like clicking a rifle bolt , but it was a chore driving both on tight winding mountain roads here in the Bay Area with these units. I haven't driven a 996 with one , but I suspect it would be similar. OTOH, I'm very pleased with the under car kit.
It still doesn't feel like the smooth, effortless, short click-click like on the new Nissan 350 Z, but I think that has more to do with tranny interior design and the length of the 996's cables . I've read how Porsche uses new square section cables on the Carrera GT to improve feel and accuracy. Suspect that and many other elements of that car will trickle down to the 997 range.
