Reported cause
Turns out it was the electronic box clipped to the bottom of the passanger seat.
Leading evidence: 'electronic box clipped' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'electronic box clipped' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). My C4S had a similar problem at about 9K miles and turned out to be a loose rear stabilizer bar.

I thought for sure it was the passenger's seat belt retractor on the B pillar.

Suggestion
It was cured by changing the anti roll bar drop links and also the bushes that hold the roll bar to the body.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'd appreciate feedback on squeaks and rattles in a new C4 coupe. Most of them seem to originate around passenger door or possibly passenger seat. Driver's side door is quiet. As this is my first 911 I don't know whether these are 'normal' or not. Any ideas on whether it is possible to make these go away, and, if so, how? I also have a Boxster but as I nearly always drive it with the top down I'm not aware of any particular noises.
Also there is a pronounced clunk sound from the rear when I go over UK speed bumps (called 'sleeping policemen' here) at low speed. The sound is identical to that made by a loose jack or lug wrench in the trunk of an old car. Is there enough flex in the exhaust system mounting to cause this?
I've seen lots of other posts that suggest masking sounds with radio, open windows, louder exhausts, etc. But it's getting cold here and the car is leased, which limits my options.
Thanks in advance for any comments or advice.
Not sure how new your car is. My C4S had a similar problem at about 9K miles and turned out to be a loose rear stabilizer bar. Check this thread.

I had the same issue on my '99 996 C4.
It was cured by changing the anti roll bar drop links and also the bushes that hold the roll bar to the body. Not expensive and it really improved the turn in etc of the car and made it feel much more "fresh"
FYI the car has only done 30k miles and is a UK FPSH car.

Thanks for the responses. FYI this was a brand new car in August and has only 2300 miles on the clock now. The thunk from the rear has been there from new. I'll have a dealer check it out.
Still no replies on the squeaking and groaning from the passenger door, so maybe that is normal after all.
I have a C2 with 500 miles only and have the rear wheel 'thunk' which I put down to stiff suspension and wide 30 series tires as explained by the dealer. I would be interested if the 'thunk' is a bushing issue which could be minimized, please keep us posted. I also have a few cockpit/seat sounds but I'm too busy hanging on to notice much. Enjoy the ride!
My 2003 C2 with sport suspension also makes a thud when the rear of the car comes down off a speed bump. Asked dealer to check out suspension when car was in shop for another reason and he told me that the noise is normal and "they all do that under the right conditions."
Regarding squeaks & rattles, I've driven 3 996's (2000, 2001, 2003) extensively and all exhibited similar cacophony from interior trim parts, doors and windows. I'm beginning to think it's just the personality of these cars and that different people have different haering abilities or tolerances to the noises, hence the various reports and experiences.
I found the source of a very irritating interior rattle today that seemed to manifest itself over even the slightest bump. I thought for sure it was the passenger's seat belt retractor on the B pillar. Turns out it was the electronic box clipped to the bottom of the passanger seat. The guys at my dealership (Brumos) took the seat out and zip-tied this little box into place so it wouldn't rattle. All's quiet!!!
There are about a million places where they can actually rattle, and as noises get "telephoned" from one part to another, it is very often quite tricky to find the place where the sound originates from.
Dealers don't like customers complaining about noises under warranty, because (at least in the UK) they don't get paid for diagnostic time but just for actually fixing the problem. As the actual fix usually just involves sticking a piece of felt somewhere, there is not much money in it for the dealer.
To give you an example, it took us a whole morning (and we started at 7am) to de-rattle my 996 in the factory in Stuttgart, 3/4 of which was spent driving around and finding out where the rattles came from.
If the noises occur all the time, my advice would be to go to your dealer, go for a drive with the mechanic, point out the noises and ask them to fix it. If they say it's normal, don't believe them and insist . If all fails, talk to AFN (or Porsche Great Britain, as they are called now). A 60-grand+ car shouldn't squeak and rattle.
Cheers,
Uwe
Another source of squeak and rattle found on my 01 996 Cab. The aluminum plate on the passenger door jamb that spells "carrera". dealer replaced it and the squeak went away.
Porsche do supply some kits (teflon adhesive strips) which can be carefully placed to stop squeakes coming from rubbing parts (metal, rubber etc.).
I have had a few applied to the lever system of my hood and all noices have gone away totally!
