If so, is it a matter of simply adding a couple of gallons, cranking it up and driving to a filling station?

Leading evidence: 'Replace once' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'errors' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill station' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause

I believe more than likely the errors with gas guages usually overestimate the amount of miles till empty.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Has anyone actually ran out of fuel due to the fuel gauges being less than accurate? If so, is it a matter of simply adding a couple of gallons, cranking it up and driving to a filling station? I've heard different stories...1 that's interesting is that if you run out of fuel, adding a couple of gallons to crank it up dosen't work. Does that imply that the car would have to be "primed" or something? Or is this all fantasy? Phattey

POST 2Original post

There is nothing in the shop manual about priming anything if the various parts of the fuel system are replaced. Jeff

POST 3Original post

I'v driven my car until the trip computer gave me a range of 6 miles and the needle was in the red. It's not that I enjoy it, but I was late for work. Are these gauge inacuracies showing a tank over-full or under-full?

POST 4Original post

my gauge seems off. i can never get it completely full reading. fill up at 1/4 tank left is about 7-8 gallons. the service tech told me to fill up at 1/4 tank as the c4s has a split tank and it estimates how much fuel is left?? not sure if this is the case or not. he had said they had a customer run out of fuel with 90+ miles on the computer.

POST 5Original post

I've felt like I was running on fumes with the computer showing me 20 miles till empty. I was starting to get incredibly nervous. I believe more than likely the errors with gas guages usually overestimate the amount of miles till empty.

POST 6Original post

i've had problems with the gas gauge in my 2001 C4. it was replaced once, but it still doesn't work quite right. if it gets towards empty i have to put at least 5 gallons in it before the fuel gauge will register that any gas at all has been put in. i ran out of gas once when my gas gauge was broken, and then i added only a few gallons before driving it home and i didn't have any problems, so at least in a 2001 C4 it didn't seem to need to be primed.

POST 7Original post

They are conservative. Once the needle is through the red and the range on the trip computer switches to "---", you've got about a couple of liters left. That's how it's supposed to be, but YMMV, so don't rely on it. Cheers, Uwe

POST 8Original post

Heres what I do....at the 1/4 mark on my gauge......I add more fuel! regardless off what the "miles to empty computer"reads.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Phil's got the right solution.... Phattey...

POST 10Original post

Phattey....ran out of fuel, once! Coasted into a parking spot, ran to the nearest gas station and bought a one gallon jug and gas. Dropped the gallon into the car and she cranked right up. Drove back to the gas station to fill it up the rest of the way. The fuel guage is ridiculous. At times it will drop down to half full, after traveling less than 100 miles. On the other hand, I recently got 200 miles out of a half tank on a highway road trip. Go figure. Good luck with yours!
