For example, having done a stint in El Salvador a few years back and mistankingly run into some guerilleros I had the pleasure to have an M-16 applied to my temple...glad they ended up not pulling the trigger.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

23 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all: Looking for a little tie breaker between my best Bud and I. He does not like my plate: The car: 00 996 Cab--Arctic The plate: EXOCET The meaning: Named after the silver French Navy Air to Ground missile that is itself named after a very fast silver flying fish. What say you all?

POST 2Original post

Like it! Although it will be a head-scratcher for those with no military knowledge

POST 3Original post

I'm not sure I'd want any connection with French naval efforts. They make some successful wines though.

POST 4Original post

How about this one (picture taken from my car on the corner of Vanalden and Ventura in Tarzana, CA) on a pre-02 blue cab...

POST 5Original post

Exocet is good. Hey, mine is MISTY and it doesn't mean anything to anyone except for Cindy and me... so go for it!

POST 7Original post

Exocet missles have Royal Navy and US Navy ships. Your intention may be misunderstood!

POST 8Original post

Don't like it either. It seems too un-American, and it caused severe damage to a British vessel and killed British men, our staunchest allies. But, to each his own. If YOU like it, keep it end enjoy.

POST 9Original post

Us older guys might get it, but many might think you are a former "OCET", whatever that might be. The only person who has to be pleased by your car is you, so tell your friend to find some other concern. AS

POST 11Original post

I have to vote nay on this one. The Exocet and Silkworm are essentially enemy missiles to the US and UK. Wouldn't want that on my car.

POST 12Original post

If people run Michelins, does that mean they're unpatriotic? Riiiight. Personally, if Exocet works for you, go for it. I associate the word with the French missile, but I'm not sure too many other drivers will get it. How important is it for them to get it

POST 13Original post

Can not help it right now, but nothing french on my car.

POST 14Original post

It was two Exocet missiles (France) that an Iraqi Mirage F-1 jet (France) fired on the USS Stark in March 1987 which killed 37 U.S. Navy Sailors. I would not like the connotation or association of that on my car.

POST 15Original post

And you also have the British ship in the Falklands. I agree, you can't compare this to having Michelins.

POST 16Original post

Zamirz, that is a hysterical plate, even the frame is funny..

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Appreciate and respect everyone's perspectives on this, particularly those who feel it may be unpatriotic, which is not at all my intent. Without overly politicizing or enflaming this, I would like to go on record saying that any tragic casualties from the Exocet: a- Where not by French troops b- Pale in comparison to German inflicted casualties to those same countries in WW1 and WW2... Do most of you realize where P- cars are made?

POST 18Original post

Of course, modern day Germany is a far cry from the terrible days of Hitler. But the Exocet is a present day danger. One that our military has to plan against and train against right now. The word itself is just negative (if you are American or British). You wouldn't put V2 on your car, would you? Or imagine a car with SCUD on the license plate. To me SCUD and Exocet are equally negative.

POST 19Original post

My perspective is that the Porsche unlike the Exocet is not a killing machine. Maybe I should call my car Villeneuve which is either a tribute to the racer orrrrr... the Admiral of the defeated fleet at Trafalgar. Why I would post this I'm not sure but my plate remains meaningless, my car purposeful.

POST 20 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Did not mean to get people upset. Let's forget about my plate....

POST 21Original post

I associate Exocet with a high tech, fast sleek and highly maneuvrable missile. And yes, I would like to think that compares favorably to my Porsche. Anybody who thinks a person with Exocet on his Porsche likes to see British or US ships sunk is going past the obvious interpretation mis-reading the intention of the owner. And yes, Porsches are made in Germany, Michelins in France, and the Super Unleaded in Saudi Arabia. So what?

POST 22Original post

Guess your buddy wins the bet then........................as he should. Innocent question, great (recent) history lesson. BTW, the Stark's Captain lost his command and was "retired" from the Navy for having his Phalanx (computer driven gatling gun) standing down in a war zone. Pick a weapon we use.....................

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

For what it's worth and only in the spirit of analytical rigor: The size of the American arms export market dwarves that of any Western European nation (eg France) perhaps any nation in the world (not sure about Russia). As a result, in any of the armed conflicts and skirmishes of the last 50 years it is probably safe to assume that there are many more tragic American losses to American-made weaponry than there are to French weaponry...not counting any of the even more tragic "friendly fire" accidents. For example, having done a stint in El Salvador a few years back and mistankingly run into some guerilleros I had the pleasure to have an M-16 applied to my temple...glad they ended up not pulling the trigger. In the end I think that C4C_Leon is bang on but as for the rest I guess I can see more of the argument that says "don't use a missile name at all" than the one that says"don't use a missile name from France"

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
