This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im looking to fit a hardtop to this 99. I have never fitted one before. Is it normal that the two sides are slightly different on the car? The top picture casting is marked with a 2 and is slightly different from the other side. I have obtained a wrench and it appears that it engages the Allen fitting on the actual hardtop. Just checking nothing is missing that would prevent the hardtop to fit. Im looking for a 1999 only color and would likely have to drive a distance and try to fit it. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Yes, they are different because one of them carries the power to the window defroster. Once you source a top, you will need to fit it to your car. It isn't a bolt and go, except by luck. I have the documentation I can share. DM me.

Related to above, I just made an offer to buy a Hardtop in v good condition for my 2002 C4 Cabrio. My intent when picking it up is to drive it home atop my '02 C4 Cabrio. Is it likely to fit adequately enough to make the ride home, before fine tuning the fitment?? What tools will I need to lock the hardtop down in the sockets? No tools are coming with the top. What is the recommended Allen (hex?) wrench size and shape to bring along? Thanks and regards, Jeff

POST 4Original post

6mm. See attachment for install adjustments. With luck it will fit well enough to get it home. Theo

Thanks Theo thats awesome .

POST 6Original post

Has anybody retrofitted the hardtop mount on a hardtop-deleted car? I love having the removable hard top, but I bought a '04 C4S, and the build sheet indicates that it was removed.

Here is a good tutorial with pictures: https://www.diyauto.com/manufacturer...a-997-by-wiggy You need to be aware of what type of rear mounts the hardtop has. There are two styles....the 996's had "bayonet" style mounts where the later cars had a screw style mount. The tutorial I posted shows the later screw style. You will need to have the matching receivers for the style of rear mounts the top has on it. I did the retrofit on my 997 and the top I found had the old style bayonets so I sourced the correct receivers from DC Auto. You can also find them on eBay.

If you have the receivers on your car like the ones shown in the first post, you can drop in a hardtop. I did and many of us have done it. The hardtop will need some adjustment to fit it exactly to your car, but it will work. It's a less expensive way of getting the hardtop.

POST 9Original post

For what it’s worth, my ‘04 has the factory top and bayonet-style locks.
