also got a set of Fabspeed bypass pipes, and since it seemed like it would be way easier to change the plugs with the muffl-a-tors off I figure why not try them out.

It appears you can set off car alarms in garages and parked cars on the street if you have it rumbling that loud.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Well today was 30k service day... also got a set of Fabspeed bypass pipes, and since it seemed like it would be way easier to change the plugs with the muffl-a-tors off I figure why not try them out.
They rock.... and yea, they're pretty darn loud when you're on the gas... but they sound soooo goooooood !!!!!!!
Now as far as I'm concerned the stock silencers are waaaaay to quiet... I realize Porsche has to do this to meet worldwide noise standards but geeez, this is a sports car after all!
I can see that for some of you they would be too loud... I recon if I lived in a quiet suburb I would be worried about pissing the neighbors off... but I live in the city where Harley Davidsons are born (Milwaukee)... just came back from a cruise and I barely got a look from anyone... I have heard a lot of Harley's that are louder (come to think of it I have heard many Harleys around here that are ear splitting loud).
At idle the car sounds wonderful... if you drive responsibly and sanely around the 'hood (as you should!) there is some good solid rumble but nothing crazy... when you jump on the gas all hell breaks loose!!!! (at least it sounds like it!)
Rolling down I-43 with the crusie set to 70 I was able to listen to NPR quiet easily... of course I had to turn the radio up a notch or two....
The acid test will be what the girlfriend says....

Mastermind,
Your starting to make me lean towards those bypass's too....
I live in a NOISY city, but my house sits on a quiet dead-end but I've got
GREAT neighbors who don't seem to mind me working on my cars and motorcycles either.....maybe I should take the plunge, but thats alot of $$$ for pipes and tips!
Yea, they're not cheap.
But.... they are nice little works of art.. very good build quality. I know some here have suggested doing the muffler shop thing.. and I suppose as a test or just for the track that's fine.. but really... it's such a nice car... it deserves nice parts !!!!
Interestingly enough... I was helping a friend last weekend throw some Koni's & H&R's on his Civic .. he had a straight pipe muffler bypass that looked like it was make at a muffler shop.. anyway... I sez "Dude.. you need a tip on there!" (it was just a bare pipe... kinda ratty looking... ) and he sez "I had one, but it rattled" ... anyway.. this made me think that it's probably worth the extra bread for a good part....
Anyway... the Fabspeed guys are really nice... nice welds, heavy gauge stainless... they are a quality part....
As an aside.... it's nice when a car full of guys and girls pulls up along side and and yell, "Dude, your car ****ing ROCKS !!!!!".
Ya gotta love that...
trev
trev,
lol...did you stand outside and let someone drive the car?
I suggest you do so, because if you say they are loud from the inside, keep in mind that the engine is in the back and if you say they're loud with the windows closed, louder with them open, try it when you're on the sidewalk and someone floors the car by you at full RPM.
Just make sure then you'll know how loud it really is. I have a set of sport cats/sport mufflers, it sounds quiet to me, but when my friend was following me at full throttle on the freeway they said it rocks. I was like, you can actually hear it, and yes, you bet it was louder than from what i can hear on the cockpit with all the windows down. Mine is loud enough that the neighbor two houses across the street on a dark cold midnight can hear me pulling out the car when i sneak out of the house from the kids.
It appears you can set off car alarms in garages and parked cars on the street if you have it rumbling that loud. Some cops itching to write some paper may pull you for it, all you have to do is tell them it is stock and they may let you go.
My feeling on them is that they weren't nearly as loud as some of the posts I've read had led me to think they would be.
I don't have them on my car, but a friend does and I've stood in my driveway as he's backed up and driven away. As long as you're considerate and don't get on the gas it's not bad.
I suppose if you live in a Townhouse surrounded by pavement and right on the street, it might be annoying to your neighbors. There's a deep rumble at low RPMs that in close quarters might be felt, more than heard, but if there's some lawn, trees, and space it's not bad at all. I don't even know he's at my house until he rings the doorbell.
It is a little loud when he gets on the gas --I think a Harley was a good comparison volume wise. I'd be more worried about a ticket due to the noise from 'spirited' driving than annoying your neighbors.
Yup.. they are loud.
Personally I am not one to floor it around the 'hood... ever. As long as you're light on the gas it's pretty tolerable.... but yea... when you step on it, it gets pretty crazy.....
The girlfriend will probably hate it though....
trev
yeah it depends on what type of neighboorhood it is i guess...i live in the quiet hills, which catches all the sounds from all angles and the community is surrounded by trees. its tollerable any car thats loud as long as its passing by in cruising mode and not accelerating or sitting in front of the house.
try idling the car going into the house on a quiet day, imagine you're sleeping and see if it doesn't bother anyone. The reason mine does is because i live on a slope when i reverse out of the driveway and turn into the street i need to pump the gas a bit and that's when it gets loud.
I'm pretty sure they DON'T pass, and Laguna Seca is STRICT on that!!!
Somebody needs to do a dB test ASAP and confirm this for all you TRACK Junkies.......
My neighbors are gonna hate me SOOOON
Since my day gig is audio I have a good dB meter... I will try to do some measurements soon but next week is sorta crazy....
The question is.. where should the measurement be taken??? How many feet away ???
