Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Mine only leaked small amounts but it turned out to be the RMS and I just had it replaced in September.
Leading evidence: 'rms and i just had it replaced in september' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'rms and i just had it replaced in september' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace rms they also' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. When they last replaced the RMS they also fixed a coolant leak on the front right side radiator area.

Well guess what ?- my Rear Main Seal in leaking again - I just had it changed for the third time about 2 months ago.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

When they last replaced the RMS they also fixed a coolant leak on the front right side radiator area. Well guess what ? This is also leaking again..
I am off to see an attorney next week - I want my money refunded..
Even if they offer a replacement engine, I don't think this is acceptable as this will de-value the car when it comes time to sell - i.e. non matching engine number
Thunder
Is this Rear Main Seal issue something that mostly only occurs with the water cooled engines or has this been an issue with 993 air cooled engines?
Is this as common with other cars (BMW, Mercedes) or is this more a Porsche issue?
As I get closer to buying, this is definitely a concern.
Charlie
I understand that's it normal for Porsche's to consume some oil..
My issue is that their is oil on my garage floor...In the centre area of the engine/gearbox.
You know it's the RMS if you find drops of oil on your garage floor dead center. The RMS is located in the center between the engine and trans. Mine only leaked small amounts but it turned out to be the RMS and I just had it replaced in September. Started at about 28,000 miles. MY99. Car was out of warranty but fortunately PORSCHE repaired it as a good will gesture due to this being a known defect. By the way, I visited London last year for the first time......what a great city...loved every minute of it....lost of Porsches cruising around also. Quite dirty though....guess you folks do not have many garages in the city?? Also loved Liverpool. Overall a great country. Can't wait to go back.
Thunder,
My sympathizes on your RMS problem. Hopefully mine will not continue. I think I would try and trade at this point. Hope you won't give up on the P-cars after this bad experience. I have owned them for sometime and in my opinion they are the ultimate production car.
"Even if they offer a replacement engine, I don't think this is acceptable as this will de-value the car when it comes time to sell - i.e. non matching engine number"
i dunno, with the rep porsche has for RMS problems, it might actually increase your value if the buyer knew you'd already had it
Thunder...do they have any kind of "lemon law" protection in Australia? If so it would seem to me that the car itself is toast and while you may not get your money back you should be entitled to a new car.
Is it possible that your dealer didn't actually do the proper work and charged Porsche for it?
Had the same problem with my 2001 cab. Got a new engine. I would complain to the Porsche rep who handles your region. My rep in Canada was stand-up so I did not care. If yours does not stand up to the product, give them hell. So much for German engineering!
Let us know how your issue is resolved.
Thunder, so sorry to hear about that, but like 996 Aero says, do not give up on porsche. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maseratti, all have much worse maintenance issues and costs. While it is very unfortunate that your RMS is leaking, I think, by what I have been reading on this board, that Porsche will try to make it right .
If you have Lemon Laws in Australia, you might be entiteled to a new car, if not, at least a new engine. Have all repairs been at one dealership? Or have you taken it to several? How long between repairs?
Leon,

Not trying to start a flame war that that has not been my experiance. I owned one Lambo, 2 Ferrari's and a bunch of Lotus's, never had a major mechanical problem with any of them. Maintainance is more expensive for regular service but if they do it right that's fine with me. If I wanted cheap service I'd get a Honda...
I hope they improve the 997 (RMS and Trans) and allow servicing of the engine/trans. If not, I won't get one.
Roy
RWO, that's good to hear, as I was considering purchasing a Ferrari but was put off by several reports of shoddy construction. If you don't mind my asking, what models of Ferrari did you own? And what do you consider "major mechanical problems"? Did Ferrari take care of them?
I apologize in advance for the OT discussion.
Leon,
I had old cars, 308s. One had an oil sending unit go out that dropped some oil. They replaced it under warranty and I had no other problems with the car. I owned two, one I bought used and one I bought new. They were daily drivers. While they were good cars imo, I was not into the driving experiance. I went back to Lotus and then settled into P cars
I have two close friends that have Ferrari's, one has a 360 and one has a 355. Both have had no problems and one of the guys drives like he's at Le Mans every time he gets in the car. Frankly I'm shocked he has not blown the thing up.
My next car, a 360 Spider, arrives in 3 weeks.
