His car was on 19" e88s and had been fitted with the Bilstein B16s that still work with the PASM function, and it had had a very accurate laser-guided alignment done.

My suspension is currently bone stock, 75k miles old, and I'm running solid twists with PilotSport 4s, but I've never gotten it to step out on me on accident (even when pushing HARD) and it feels really planted considering.

I run stock brakes with PFC pads, B8 with Eibach, GT3 rear sway and front coffins with a stock 6GT3 alignment and height…so nothing fancy.

I have used the above referenced set-up for the last 17 years with 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 on carrera 2s.

Depending on how far you want to take it, and if you want to be able to do double and drive it on both the street and track, I would recommend the following:
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I got some seat time in an exceptionally nice 997.1 GT3 this weekend and it gave me a lot to think about.
I'm curious if any of you have gotten to rip around in one of those and what your opinions are after coming back to your 996.
I'm planning on doing a major suspension refresh and upgrade on my 2000 996 C2 6MT over the winter and I already had a good idea of what I wanted to feel out of my car, but I was surprised by how much feedback the GT3 gave through the seat. His car was on 19" e88s and had been fitted with the Bilstein B16s that still work with the PASM function, and it had had a very accurate laser-guided alignment done. It felt really precise and stiff, but not brutal--even in the sport setting. The way the rear communicated is very much something I want more of in my car.
My plan was to go with the Ohlins RnTs/Tarett adjustable sways/droplinks/camber plates and refresh all my bushings. My car has no LSD and no traction control or PSM, and it has a 3.8 build out back, so it's got a good bit more power. My suspension is currently bone stock, 75k miles old, and I'm running solid twists with PilotSport 4s, but I've never gotten it to step out on me on accident (even when pushing HARD) and it feels really planted considering. I feel like a lot of the feedback I was getting out of the back was the lighter rear wheels.
So how well does a properly dialed-in 996 C2 chassis compare to a 996 or 997.1 GT3? What are the major feel differences you've experienced? Obviously alignment and context play a huge role here.
The chassis r essencially the same and so r the suspensions. So u can put 6-gt3 parts on and it will give u a sportier ride. I would shy away from 19s but a good coilover and agressive alignmnet/height will get u the feel u want. What u will never get is the feel of the high strung Mezger motor, which is 75% of the excitment of a gt3 car.
@De Jeeper
Right on! I'm not planning on doing 19s, just wanted to give a sense of the weight/construction type. I think I'll be going with 18" LMs, so a bit heavier out back. I have to say the motor was really, really good, but I do love my 3.8 build and I think once I get a tune to improve throttle response installed and settle on an exhaust setup I like, I'll be really happy with the car and still be into it for $80k less than a 997 GT3 lol.
I fully agree. A nice light wheel will feel better. I would look into some rss front camber arms (or oem gt3 shimmable arms). Upper rear heim dogbones and rear tarret adjustable toe arms.
This should give u enough flexablity for an agressive height and alignment without making the ride too harsh. U may also want to spec out the 6-gt3 spring rated on the ohlins.
OP - My experience is a well-driven 6C2 with decent suspension and more-than-stock hp of 350+ can stay with or pass a GT, with an average driver, in turns or under braking, but can’t get enough power down quickly enough in the straights like a GT. I run stock brakes with PFC pads, B8 with Eibach, GT3 rear sway and front coffins with a stock 6GT3 alignment and height…so nothing fancy. My engine output is right at 370 with a good torque curve very similar to a 6GT3, so down a little on power and torque, but close.
The cars after 997 are so superior with power and shift speed, suspension a 996 is dusted about 3 seconds after corner out. The only place you might make some of that up is with our really good, trusty brakes.
With your planned upgrades you’ll hang tough with your group’s C8s, M2/M3s. The only other item I’m installing now is a Wavetrac to maybe help me tip in more throttle on exit. I think you’ll be in your “happy place” between street and track performance.
It's a street car that I hustle through rural backroads mostly. I just want it to feel as close to as precise and "talkative" as my bud's car that I can get it, but I do appreciate that info.
With the exception of the LSD, I did your exact set up with adjustables up front. The car was an absolute dream on track day. 997.1 Forged GT3 LCAs(front)
Demon Speed GT3 Outers(front)
Meyle dog bones x4
Meyle forks
Meyle LCAs
Meyle tie rod kit(inner/outer)
Tarett end links(F/R)
Tarett LCA shims
Tarett Sways
Sway bar bushings(F/R)
Ohlins R&T
Exactly, since theyre maintenance items and Im not fast enough to justify a true fully adjustable set up I opted for OEM equivalents. My instructor was very surprised how dialed in the car was.
The last face arrived at Zweck in Miami! Im just trying to see if Im rebuilding them this year or next year. Work is doing to be insane and Ill just slum it on the TEs for now.
I've got RSS LCA in the front, my rears I kept and put in elephant hard bushings with solid metal center pucks.
Also solid toe arms and dogbones from Torque Solutions.
My favorite tire setup is a 245/35 315/30 18s.
A fun video of me out with a 991.2 GT3, we are good friends and he is not the fastest driver, most would be a couple of seconds faster.

In answer to your question, you can get your 996 C2 chassis to feel just as good as any stock GT3 and even better. All depends on how far you want to take setting up the chassis. The guys gave plenty of good suggestions.
Depending on how far you want to take it, and if you want to be able to do double and drive it on both the street and track, I would recommend the following:
1. Ohlins R/T, PSS10, MCS one way adjustable coilovers,
2. Tarret GT3 sway bars front and rear,
3. Tarret droplinks,
4. GT3 set-up,
5. Guard LSD
6. and at the very least, upgrade your rotors and pads or better yet, get a big brake kit,
7. GT3 seats or recarros to keep you planted.
This set-up is substantially better than any stock GT3 for handling less any HP/TQ differential. Sure, the GT3 owner can do the same as listed above, and then it comes down to driver skill and HP/TQ differential.
I have used the above referenced set-up for the last 17 years with 225x40x18 and 285x30x18 on carrera 2s. Even with the HP/TQ differential we have to the new high power models, i have no problems with speed in the fastest run group. Sure, its tough to out drag any model 991 or 992 on the straights with such a big HP differential. But i can make it up in braking, cornering and exit.
One more thing to mention. Assuming you have an equal suspension set-up to the next guy, bigger brakes and LSD is the deciding factor. I never knew what I was missing until I added a Brembo GT Big brake kit (2 piece floating hat system) and Guard LSD. Holy cow. Night and day difference in stability and speed.
Good luck!
