Just got my first Porsche, it's the Lapis Blue 99 Convertible. On some of the maintenance paperwork from the previous owner I noticed a recommandation by the dealer for Flywheel Seal Leaking. I have driven the car now for about 500 miles, and have not noticed any oil leak, yet... Should I worry, or it's this an easy to fix problem? Please advise Marcel SoCa, Aliso Viejo

Rear Main [engine] Seal or better known as RMS,,, welcome to the club! You better have it checked... it can spoil your clutch disc and plate.. Way to check: raise the car from the back, check the joint between the gear and the engine.. if there is oil coming down from it, you're hit.. if it's dry then you're ok... Here goes:

Gee Marcel, sorry to hear about it old bud. It's not a nice intro the P club but its a real common problem on 996s especially early models. Late models will get their turn You know you have this problem if the leak is "dead centre" at the back of the engine looking at it from the rear. If it ain't dead centre then its something else. RMS replacement is an expensive hike. Drop the gearbox, replace two seels and almost definitely replace the clutch and pressure plate at the same time. I have even heard of flywheel replacements. If I were you I would take it back to the dealer.
