BTW, you really should test drive a C4 in the rain to appreciate the difference.

I have driven the Carrera but not the C4 I will test drive one this weekend and post back.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am in the market for either a Cab or C4 996, I sold my 993 and was trying to decide between a 90's 348 TB/TS Ferrari or a C4 996 or Cab.I have decided against the Ferrari because of the extremely high maint. What should I look for when purchasing a C4 996? Any major problems I should look for? Is the C4 quicker than the standard Carrera? I used to think the 993 looked better but the 996 in person looks incredible. I plan on buying a Gemballa Front Spoiler and Side Skirts. What kinds of Engine modifications show decent gains? Thanks for any information in advanced.

Cab or C4?
You know that you can have both...a C4 Cab?
Whether to cab or not is a matter of how much you like the sunshine. Here in Calif, it is an easy call.
C4 v. C2 is also a tradeoff. C4 is heavier and slower, but some people really like it's wider rear track & styling. Other people really like it's handling, with 4 wheels under power. You really have to do some test driving to decide for yourself! No bad choices either way. Good luck.
Personally, I would go for a C4 Cab with the hardtop. The h'top pops on and off very easy and when it's on it's just like a coupe...even better because you can open all 4 windows.
With the soft top up it is just as quiet and tight as a coupe IMHO.
And with the open top and the windscreen up you can easily carry on a conversation at speed. For me there is no other choice and I have the hardtop set up so I can take it on/off in just a few minutes.
Go for the Cab!
I must like butt ugly then - to each his own.
0-62 is a tenth of a second difference 5.1 vs 5.2 secs (Porsche's #s)
Unless your a pro racer you will really benefit from the all-wheel drive, plus PSM is standard on a 4.
Try to choose a model early 99 or after, the first models in 98 got some problems wich ones were resolved under warranty. Nothing to be afraid of. You can consult the Search archives about this topic widely discussed.
It seems tha the C2 is a little bit faster than a C4 (lap times?), the way of driving is also different. This is up to you ! you have to test 'em. And where also you'll drive it.
Im agree with you, I realized that the 996 is much better to see it live much more than in pictures!!
Gemballa it's a great tunner also.
Another opinion. I am now driving a C4S Cab and I find it way to rigid to the point that you feel it in your teeth. With the top up road noise on the highway can be somewhat overwhelming, possibly in part to the Mich. Pilots. I will be testing a C4S coupe as an alternative. I do use this car as a daily driver and on roads in Northen NJ.
Thank You for the information. I was not aware of the C4 cab. I am having a small problem now after driving the M3 Conv. I really like the way the car drives and looks. I have driven the Carrera but not the C4 I will test drive one this weekend and post back. Decisions .....Decisions Thanks Again
Greg
I assume you are aware that the C4S comes with a stiffer suspension than the C2...it is supposed to be rigid.
You'd probably be happier in a C2 or C4 cab.
Just my $0.02.
My 993 had Bilstein PSS9's and they were very stiff. I think I will stay away from that and purchase a dedicated track car with racing suspension later on. Thanks for the advice. BTW I think the Cab looks incredible with the top down or up. Just My Opinion.
I have had my C4 cab (tip) for 3 years, use it as a daily driver (and lots of miles, almost 50k) and love it. I find that it is quieter with the hard top on than it is with the cab top up. (Don prolly has a better soft top, or my ears are more sensitive). I take the car out of storage in April, take the hard top off late May and put it back on in October, till the end of November when the car goes back into storage. I really like the versatility of the hard top rag top choices.
As for "butt ugly", well beauty is in the eye of the beholder and not everyone has perfect vision.
You may want to choose different words when expressing your opinion in person......
