I am looking at a 2k mi trip after xmas. I was wondering if anybody uses the vinyl bar or what other options there are for protecting one's front end?

I use one for my S, to go to the mountains. I think it has more protection for the bigger stones from sand trucks. I have a Calgon and at high speeds it remains tight. They're relatively in inexpensive.

I have one for my '00 Boxter. It is relatively easy to put on and remove with piece that fits over the trunk lid and another piece that wraps from fender well to fender well. I use it for extended road trips. I investigated one for my C4S, but they are hard to find for C4S (C2 is easy). However, even the one for the straight C2 looked like a lot more bother to put on since they changed the headlights from '01 to '02. You have to remove fender bolts and put these hook holders in. I just slide the hood cover from my Boxter on the C4S (same size) until I can find a hookup for the clear bra. A shortcoming of the removable bras is the road dust that can accumulate under the bra and scratch the paint finish, especially under the piece that fits on the trunk lid. You'll end up with a scatch line across the hood if you leave it on like forever. However, if you are careful removing it and keep it clean on the underside, it is a relatively inexpensive alternative for protecting the front end.

Just get an X-pel or Stoneguard type. They work great, cause no damage to your car, and are invisible.
