So the later 99s are sort of the second-year models, not the first, and there were a lot of changes made to them by early in 1999.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Flirting with a 996 C2 cabriolet to replace my 993 C4 coupe ... three cars locally, two 99 C2 cabs and one 00 C2 cab. The 00 cab is a little more $$$, and not as heavily optioned as the two 99s. Are there significant differences if both 99s are later models (i.e, clear taillights)?
Also, can anyone tell me if there is a significant advantage to PSM (which the 00 has) over traction control, which the 99s both have? I'm thinking specifically in terms of winter driving, as it's a daily driver for me.
Does it make more sense to have a heavily optioned 99 over a lesser-optioned 00 wilth similar miles if the price difference is, say, $3k or so? For example, both 99s have full leather; the 00 is partial leather. All three cars are Porsche certified.
TIA

I generally prefer to stay away from the first model year of any car / engine. The early 99's had some issues, but I'd think that if the main oil seal was going to give, it would have by now.
The 00 and newer is a Egas car and many things were improved through the computers and controls of the system. The PSM is a high activate system that monitors all the wheels and will pull throttle, brake and move the system around until the car stops in a safe manner or is under control. The gas function allows this to be possible. Also under winter conditions the PSM is very good. It will simply pull the throttle away until the car moves. I have used it many times in my twin. Beside, the egas really respond to modifying.
I have a late 99, no issues at all. There were some issues with the earliest 99s, but they were all fixed by the second half of the development cycle. The 00s have e-gas (electronic throttle), which some people don't like, while the 99s have a mechanical linkage, so that could be an issue for you.
Actually, I believe the 996s were being built as early as 1997, when they were released in Europe as '98 models. So the later 99s are sort of the second-year models, not the first, and there were a lot of changes made to them by early in 1999.
I don't have PSM or LSD, but I think that the difference is rooted in your driving style. PSM is a safer system, and could potentially get you out of some real trouble. LSD is more driver-centric (from what I've heard) and would let you get the car into just about any position that you'd want (or don't want). I think that the new GT3 has some form of LSD and no PSM, so that may tell you something about the difference.
Most important thing is to have a qualified mechanic look the car over completely. There are 03's that have huge problems, and 99s that never have and never will...
