I also ran Bridgestone Blizzaks which were great on Ice, but not as gnarly in the snow as the Hakas.

California's road division, Caltrans, is notorious for substituting gravel, road base, whatever's handy, for sand, which is used on mountain highways in nasty weather.

The 993 Targa has a space saving spare in the front trunk which I had used once.

...bought a new Evo 8 this week. Couldn't get past the "Drive/park-my-new-Porsche-anywhere" thing, so the Evo's now my beast-of-burden.
Let me tell ya, folks, if you haven't driven one of these things yet, DO!
The "Blue By You" color looks great next to my Speed Yellow C2. Now I just need to convince my wife to trade in her beige A6 4.2 for a red RS6, and we'll have all the primary colors covered!
Any suggestions on high-performance snow/ice tires? First-hand experience only, please.

I'll have to report back on that come next spring, after repeated trips up the hill to California's Sierra Nevada mountains in the snow. California's road division, Caltrans, is notorious for substituting gravel, road base, whatever's handy, for sand, which is used on mountain highways in nasty weather. This is one of the main reasons I bought the car; I don't want to trash another nice, expensive Audi in the snow, and my wife's current Audi is new and perfect. I won't lose sleep over a chipped-up nose and rockers on a $30K car.
But I've heard similar concerns over the intercooler, though haven't heard of any actual damage yet.
I'm more concerned about the lack of full-size spare. You're major-league S.O.L. if you flat w/o a spare in the snow (not that a big hole in your intercooler would be a picnic in the middle of a squall). I'll be ordering 5 snow tires after I find a stock Evo rim. What the heck would you do if you were driving a C4(S) or Turbo in these conditions, w/ different sized fronts vs. rears, I wonder?
Maybe someone makes a tighter grill for the intercooler (there IS a rather coarse grill already). Hmmm...
BTW, great car, your Mini S! I drove one the other day.

Thanks for reply and I'll be looking forward to your long term report on the Evo VIII.
Exactly the reason I bought my Cooper S as I can park and go anywhere without worries about minor body damages.
My Cayenne S also doesn't have any spare tire at all!

I also ran Bridgestone Blizzaks which were great on Ice, but not as gnarly in the snow as the Hakas. Also the Blizzaks wore quite fast, and the Nokias lasted almost three winters!!! Just my 0.02 cents.. Congrats on the EVO.
