Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suggestion
I wouldn't shift at redline...I'd shift at peak torque...check the manual to see what happens to torque just before redline.
Leading evidence: 'Check manual' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check manual' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I have tested your scenarios on my car last night and it would always shift out 1st before redline.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If I'm at a dead stop while in "D" and use the manual override to shift into first gear, the car doesn't seem like it wants to ever come out of first. It's revved up to 7,000 RPM before I became concerned and kicked it into another gear.
I thought this was supposed to shift up automatically, and then go back to being in manual. Am I doing something wrong? Or, is this what's supposed to happen? If I don't chicken out and upshift, will the car redline, or will it shift on its own?
Thanks for any advice.
Mine does the same.
Tip usually starts the car in 2nd (when in "D") and then changes to 3rd when the program thinks you want to change.
My assumption is that when you put the car in 1st (whilst still in "D") the programming thinks you want a kind of launch mode so hangs on until the redline before changing up.
In short I don't think there's anything wrong, just a feature that has specific characteristics you should be aware of.
Thanks. My problem is that it doesn't look like the car will shift at redline. I tried this again last night and at 7200 RPM I backed off and shifted it myself. Can I/should I just let it to and see what happens?
There is a rev limiter. The fuel cuts out at or just above red line, and the engine will sputter due to starvation. Unless you do this all the time, there should be no dire consequence to hitting the red line while accelerating. So, yes, you can just stand on it until redline or until the car shifts to 2nd automatically withiout worrying about engine damage.
Incidentally, I agree that manually shifting to first signals the tranny to go into "race mode", as it means you want a fast launch and most likely will floor it all the way to red line through several gears.
I wouldn't shift at redline...I'd shift at peak torque...check the manual to see what happens to torque just before redline. You don't have to worry about revs falling that much 'cause you don't have to lift!
If I put the car into 1st while still in "D" the car will change up to 2nd @6,800 rpm. I don't think mine has ever gone to 7000 rpm before changing up.
