At first I just thought it was the front radiator fans kicking on but it sounded a little louder and slightly different than they usually do.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last night I was standing about 30 feet in front of my car while it was running. The headlights were on so I couldn't see past the front end. I started to hear a loud "whining". At first I just thought it was the front radiator fans kicking on but it sounded a little louder and slightly different than they usually do. I approached the car and the sound was coming from the gas cap area! I waited a minute or so and it didn't go off. I turned the car off and the sound went away. I then restarted the car and everything was normal. I've never this noise before. Any idea what it could be? TIA

POST 3Original post

Hi, there is a little activated charcoal container in the right wheel arch to capture fuel evaporation from the tank when the car stands still. Once the engine gets started, a little fan kicks in to recactivate the charcoal. I guess that's what you might have been hearing. Cheers, Uwe

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That could be. It was pretty loud though...lol Just wanted to make sure I don't explode.
