Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, This is a follow up to my previous thread. I'm looking for a '996, but there are many questions I still have. 1) Other than the rear label, are the body styles the same on the '99 C2 and C4? 2) I know the S cars have turbo style fenders (widebody)...were they made in '99? I haven't seen any advertised, but maybe I'm missing something? When was the '996 first produced with the widebody without being a turbo? 3) Are there any differences other than the color of the lights on an early '99 and a late '99? 4) Do all 996's have rattling in the hatch? 5) Does anyone want to trade their 996 for my '85 targa and cash? Who knows, maybe someone out there want the retro-feel and look. That's about it for now. Thanks for helping out. regards,

POST 2Original post

I will try to answer some of your questions. There are very knowledgeable members on this board who may give more detail. 1. '99 C2 and C4 bodies are the same. There are however drivetrain differences, IE: AWD, etc. 2. The first year for the C4S was '02 3. Porsche reputedly makes continuous unseen improvements during a model run. I have a book I could look this up but I don't feel like getting up. Viken? 4. ? My hatch doesn't rattle. 5. Lots of cash I have heard many times that one should purchase the newest car they can afford. Having a 996 with a warranty is probably a good idea.

POST 3Original post

well from what I have heard was that the x51 was not offered with the purchase but only as an add on package for 99's. so I hope that answers that question relating to any s features - only ones factory bacially.

POST 4Original post

3. Yes, the later MY99 cars had a number of fixes for items that were seen to be a problem on the early production runs. Primarily, new coolant tank and cap, 3 different engine oils seals, gas cap seals (1st recall of 2), oil cap seals and peeling radio buttons. Some dealers will still fix these items as a courtesy. 4. There are a number of TSBs for noises and rattles. Can you be more specific abou the noise?

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys.......great input. As far as the Rear Main Seal problem, was that addressed in the late '99's? Keep 'em coming. regards,

POST 6Original post

There was no "S" model '99-01 996. However, there was an X51 powerkit option available in ROW cars only consisting of heads/cams/intake/ oiling upgrades that added approx 20hp. The C2 and C4 look the same externally, but the bodies are actually quite different, the C4 tub is stronger (why it is used in a GT3) and has accomodation for all the AWD equipment. MY 2000 cars have clear turn signals on the headlights. Otherwise the cars look the same in '99-01. The RMS was also redesigned in late '99 or '00, but there still seem to be leaks on some cars, even the '02-on cars.?? Knock on wood, my car has never leaked a drop or had an untoward rattle.
