My failed pump also made a whinning noise that could be heard next to the front tyres but the time the engine was running for more than 30 minutes..

Yesterday ay 4750 miles, my TT simply stopped running and coasted to a stop. 2 1/2 hours later the car arrived at my dealer. The dealer service advisor has told me that the diagnosis is a failed fuel pump. As I have not yet purchased the service manuals for this car, I have a few questions for the board. 1. Are fuel pump problems common with this model? I've never experienced this with any other Porsche or Bosch equipped model. 2. Where is the pump? Internal or external to the fuel tank? 3. Is the fuel filter in line BEFORE or AFTER the pump? Would it not be prudent to replace the filter as well? Any advice or insight is appreciated. Cheers,

HI Fred, I had a 99 996 and here are some answers: - I had a fuel pump failure at about 40,000miles and changed the pump myslef! - Fuel pump failure is not a serious problem, it just happens... ppl say bad fuel, bad current, factory deffect, whatever but it's not your driving or handling.. dont worry! - The pump is inside the fuel tank and the access is just under the hood on the top of the tank.. - the fuel filter is in line after the pump to the engine, it is to be replaced.. the pump has its own 'sieve' filter from the tank. (Not replaceable, but cleanable if you are witty and patient to do it!) The pump can cause lag and in your case, a TT, I suppose it can be detremental to the engine (too much boost, not much pressure, i.e not much fuel, lean mix, bang the pistons!...) My failed pump also made a whinning noise that could be heard next to the front tyres but the time the engine was running for more than 30 minutes.. Good Luck! Wael

Hi, actual fuel pump failure is not that common. More often it's the fuel pump relay. Cheers, Uwe
