I understand having your existing engine rebuilt by FSI means more downtime versus buying a new engine from them and having it installed by one of their certified installers.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Been researching FSI and Jake has been very responsive via tickets. I understand having your existing engine rebuilt by FSI means more downtime versus buying a new engine from them and having it installed by one of their certified installers. What are the pros of having your existing engine rebuilt by FSI over the latter?

POST 2Original post

Your serial numbers remain intact and you know the history of the engine. I would do a rebuild but that's my preference. I'd go new engine only if I had experienced a catastrophic.

Would expect a huge difference in cost for a rebuild/re-engineering of a good condition engine, compared to a smoked engine that needs everything including a $6k crank. Then the price for a complete engine purchase probably includes many things a great core engine rebuild might not need. Best to ask Jake about this....

POST 4Original post

You might have more options available to you with your own engine. Jake and LN have some really nice upgrades available, wallet permitting of course! But if you're just going with a standard package I would not worry too much about which to choose. Matching numbers, maybe in 20 or 30 years it will matter. But so many 996's got replacement engines that I'm not certain it will ever be that big of a deal.

Exactly .....in another 15-20 years the 996's that still have the original engines that have never been rebuilt will be extremely Rare... And as History has shown , being extremely Rare doesn't equate to higher value....it has to be extremely Rare and Desirable/Popular.. With all the displacement increases....and Parts Swapping for more HP, I am not sure what effect that will have on a "rare bone stock untouched example"................I mean the only time I would be OK with "just looking " at a 996 is when my health gets so bad I can't "drive the snot " out of one....

Ha ha. I am 70, I will be dead by then.

He was affectionately known as POP’s, stopped running HPDE’s with us at age 94. You have time 😂 Just curious, what is the cost for both an off the shelf 3.4 vs. custom rebuild?

POST 8Original post

Im also thinking that time tables matter as well. Seems like buying a full engine would be more expedient.

POST 9Original post

Reach out to @168Sierra Im almost certain hes done both.

POST 10Original post

I had mine rebuilt, but since I don’t care what my car may be worth in the future, I don’t care about potential value.(original number vs different) I would go with the quickest route. That will mean more time enjoying your FSI engine in your 996. You’ll love every minute of it, so why wait?
