Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi guys, i just purchased a 996 3-spoke leather steering wheel and leather airbag to replace the "Buick" four-spoker in my 993. Install went great and it looks and feels much better. But, the wheel and airbag has a very "matte" black finish compared to the more glossy appearance of the old steering wheel. Has anyone, on purpose or by accident, used a leather conditioner that left a bit more of a glossy finish?? Not that I mind the matte black, just that it doesn't quite match the sheen of the rest of the interior. TIA cheers, Max

POST 2Original post

If you apply conditioner the wheel will be slippery. It is also impossible to remove when you decide you don't like a slippery wheel. Ask me how I know. Son decided to do me a fvor and treat all the leather. Argh.

POST 3Original post

I'm sure that your 4 spoke wheel had the same matte finish when new. Over time, the oils in your hands will eventually give your new wheel the same sheen as your older 4 spoker.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i thought of that too Renoir, but i don't think i use the horn often enough to "oil" it up to match max

POST 5Original post

I just did my seats yesterday w/Lexol for the first time. Didn't seem to add much, if any shine, so you can cross that off the list of possibilities.

Max, get the silver crest from Ralph Boothe. It looks great.

POST 8Original post

Some of the products mentioned have a high oil residual, therefore slippery. Great for butts, not so good for gabardine trousers. "Reach out" across the bathroom lavy to your brides wonderful emollients. These products are mean't to be absorbed and will not have a high oil residual. BTW don't mention it to her (just in case).

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks for the suggestions guys....but there was such an overwhelming choice of skin care products in the bathroom i didn't know where to start!! LOL ...enough products to start my own hazardous waste site!! back to the leather....since i was stopping by the Zaino guy's place for some more Z-3 polish/wax, i thought i'd purchase some of their leather cleaner and conditioner. the label says "non-greasy, non-oily"...but don't they all. i did the seats first......mmmm... cleaner smells good! new leather scent. the conditioner smells pretty good too. it leaves a glossier finish than the Lexol that i had been previously using. after a little buffing with a clean towel, they looked good and had just the slightest bit of a slippery feel. After that little experiment, i thought i would try the steering wheel. i used the towel that i used to buff off the excess on the seats. there was enough residue left on the towel to put on a slight amount to the steering wheel rim. just enough for a bit of sheen. i then applied a bit more of the conditioner to the airbag portion. The wheel now blends in perfectly with the other surfaces ( i have the partial leather interior with sport seats) the wheel is very slightly more slippery than before the treatment, but no worse than the wheel that i took off that had a bit of a polish from use and the oils from hands. Note, the amount applied to the wheel rim was very minute. Overall, i am really happy with the Zaino on the seats...leather feels soft and the smell is "new car leather". here is the appearance of the installed wheel now: max
