You guys will always have your rear engined 911 derivative to choose from, give me something other than a Corvette to choose from when I replace the Shark.

A 4-seat car below the Boxster would probably use the V6 they pinched from the Golf R32.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Porsche Cars GB Managing Directors favorite car?
Asked by 911 World this month Andy Goss said, "The 928 GTS". Presumably the interviewer was then stuck for words.
I am somewhat partial to the 928GTS(all years) and the 89S4/GT. However, my 996C4 Coupe is really giving me a new thrill each day I drive it. If I died tomarrow and I buried in my favorite they may have to divide me three ways!
Carlos I completely agree- but Ferry loved the 928 too, and it does rank highly among the important consumer classed car in Porsche's history. I think today's management justifys their departure from what Ferry's concept of a sportscar is when they ask- "what will sustain the company through tomorrow if we built it today?" So..."the road to hell is paved with good intentions"... right? If Ferry Porsche's original concept for building cars today were in place, the 356 or perhaps the 911 (mostly Butzi), our cars would be spartan interior-ed underdogs that come from behind to win races (key word-
Race
) in a league where Ferry's cars were very much so out powered and out classed. So Ferry's departure from his original concept began while he was in charge. He began to build Porsches that people would buy, hence his step down in the late sixty's and removal of family members from blocking the rise and ideas of talented professionals internal to the company. Outside of the Butzi's concept and design of the 911 (901), the design and ideas that rocketed this car to stardom and the appeal of consumers and racers during the 70 and 80's (the RS, 930, etc. and yes- the 928) were none of the concepts of Ferry Porsche, yet these designs and ideas are the ones that inspired much about the Porsches we drive today.
Carlos my friend, boiled down, I don't think we have been driving Ferry's concept of a Porsche car since the 70's and if you will allow a bit of license to speculate...to some degree IMHO I believe he began the departure from his "original concept" with the 901/911.
The purpose of racing was to "improve the breed". The 911 has benefited tremendously from racing and if any of Ferry's ideas did prove to be a vision to follow this was the one. Our Porsches are all the products of "breed improvement" and a winning heritage that few cars can claim. So since Porsche's departure from racing it appears auto manufacturers that have taken a page from the book of Ferry Porsche's ideas and, have recently either reentered racing (Corvette, Cadillac), or are stepping up the ante of building a product more competitive with Porsche (BMW, Mercs) while we have been absent.
I agree... and though stricktly speaking the '70s were the ones with Ferry's imprint of his original thinking as you say, I would still settle for some pre-wiedeking times right now, right up to the early 90's even
Times change I guess, some say decafinating the 911's character to appeal to the masses, the cayenne, no racing program, etc and god knows what next... is necesary for Porsche's survival (that can be argued too) but sad nevertheless to watch it go down like that
Carlos
Agreed! As I've said before in another thread, the line up at the Porsche dealer is pretty boring these days. Look back at the variety during the mid 80's - 911, 924, 944 and 928. An interesting line up for a potential buyers taste and budget. Now it's a place awash in SUV's and Boxters. What's next, a pickup truck? Bring back some variety and stick a Cayenne Turbo motor in the NEW 928 and get some variety on the dealer floor. You guys will always have your rear engined 911 derivative to choose from, give me something other than a Corvette to choose from when I replace the Shark.
Absolutely Don, I'm a 911 guy myself but I was really hoping now that they developed that V8 Turbo for the Cayenne that the next step is to at least use it to bring back a powerful front-engined GT-tourer like the 928 into the model line-up but unfortunately we get this...

959.
I am with Carlos on the cars they could do with that big V8. I wish someone would make a car like the old BMW CS and 6 Series. BMW and Merc are just doing limos with crappy ergonomics in their coupes for some years.
A 4-seat car below the Boxster would probably use the V6 they pinched from the Golf R32. Hell, maybe it IS an R32 with a slightly lower ride height and somewhat firmer dampers. Oh yeah, and the same brakes but with bigger disks so it will be a Porsche.
;-)

I find it intriguing that you seem to keep wanting to slide into this forum w/ all of the Pro-928 hoohah. It's a free country and all of that, but there is a really nice 928 forum here on Rennlist that was established just for your listing pleasure. Your initial post in this thread didn't ask what everyone's favorite model P-car is, although that is the way it has progressed. You just felt like trying to stick someone's quote in front of 996 owners' faces for the sake of it. I just don't understand your motivation in these endeavours (actually I do, but that just sounded more sarcastic
).
If you feel an overwhelming need to come in and generate debate, bring some new stuff dude! FWIW....
Jeff
I don't quite see it that way Jeff but, as a 996 driver today and former 928 driver yesterday I think 928 drivers feel closer to 996 drivers than you may know. I myself jump back and forth between both the 928 forum and 996 forum. I am willing to bet that Don will be a 996 driver in the near future...he may deny it now but I will bet good money on it that his 928 someday will become a 996.
Pat:
You are correct. Enough said.
Jeff:
Most of my time (on Renn) is spent obviously at the 928 forum. We have people cross over from other forums and throw out various topics. Sometimes it's interesting to have some items to debate, rather than the usual topic such as "what's this wire, etc". Lighten up DUDE!
I enjoy it when the mud is stirred. All Porsche's have that something special that attracts specific people, and they're proud of their specific auto interest - especially within the same Marque. I love hearing why people enjoy their model Porsche, and also truly enjoy the debates of comparison as long as they not destructive in nature. As a 993 owner I've seen my share of 993 vs. 996 debate. And the 951 guys feel their car is highly capable and gets no respect. I'm sorta getting off the thread topic so I'll end it here ... I'll continue lurking various boards for the sake of knowledge and enjoyment!
Yup, I totally agree that healthy debate is a great thing. Love to initiate it, participate in it, all of that. People that repeatedly throw the same old grenades into the room and close the door don't contribute anything to the debate, they just like to spew the dogma of their own secular viewpoint while getting off on being the stirrer of the pot. It's simply wasteful, and not particularly courteous.
That's why the various boards are there, to give people a choice of where they wish to browse or participate. This happens to be a 996-related board, so I would have to guess that the intent isn't to provide this forum for owners of other types of cars to talk about how they wish that their particular car was still in production, or why it should be revived as some new model, or why some current or former automotive executive thinks that the non-996 vehicle was the best thing since ribbed condoms came into being.
If there are fresh ideas/comparisons, or original thought to debate or discuss, let's go! But, if the same people need to prattle on with the same drivel (however righteous they might be in their own mind) repeatedly, puhleeeese! fwiw.....
Jeff
Everyone is welcome on this forum. Differences of oipinion are great, otherwise this would be a very boring place. 944, 968,928...even the air cooled guys
.
BTW I always loved the 928, but my favorite would have to be the 930 slant nose.
Well, yes. You've just reconstituted/restated what I and others have already said; which is a positive thing, I guess.
Boring=dogma=bad. Fresh ideas/new perspectives/healthy debate=good.
Jeff
